Sam Miller for Forests

The Joyce Foundation has given a $5 million grant to begin cleanup of the Maumee River. Toady's article in the PD begins What happens in Northwest Ohio doesn't stay in Northwest Ohio. One of the things that will happen as part of this effort to reduce run off from agricultural land in Northwest Ohio is the planting of trees. “Working with farmers to plant trees and vegetation along the Tiffin and Blanchard rivers to restore wetlands and create a continuous buffer; and to test new drainage ditches to reduce sediment." This article extols the opportunities for industrial Northwest Ohio. But at one time this area was home to the Black Swamp.

Bottled Mahoning River water, anyone?

Submitted by Susan Miller on Tue, 02/06/2007 - 10:51.

Maybe we should see if we could make a buck (or more likely a statement) selling Cuyahoga River cocktails or Lake Erie highballs. If the idea is that enough alcohol will eliminate the need to address our water quality issues, then the folks who have the money to address these issues ought to be happy to swill away on these high powered drinks.  Add enough absinthe and sugar to some Cuyahoga River water and you've got a drink that we might call the Ohio Obliterator. Drink this and forget the Clean Water Act ever happened...

dancer of the day

Submitted by Susan Miller on Sat, 12/30/2006 - 11:44.

My hero, the man whose ideas expanded my own is interviewed here about his life and work. I had the opportunity to work with one of his very first dancers, Albert Reid when I was a 15 year old bunhead at a summer ballet school in Saratoga, NY. Needless to say, it changed my life and the course of my life’s work and world view.  So now that I have ended my career as artistic director of a modern dance repertory company here in Northeast Ohio, I, like Merce, am still dancing and still seeing dance even though I may not be entering theaters to do so as often as before. Now for example I head out for the dance of dog walking. Today, the lighting design is especially brilliant.

off grid mini home for urban infill

Submitted by Susan Miller on Wed, 10/04/2006 - 21:21.

Norm,
If you're in Toronto October 6-9 check out the mini home at the International Home and Garden Show. MiniHomage   Here’s the history: http://sustain.ca/  This is an affordable way for young professionals to stick it to the city. Buy the cheap lot and live there with the elements and no utility bills. When you’ve had enough of the BS polotics, just roll, dude. They’re lovely in the pics. I can imagine a few of them sitting lightly along the bluffs looking so moderne.

You think SAFMOD’s cool? Check out this guy who actually pays homage to the master of multimedia dance construction. Uh, that would be the late Alwin Nikolais who pioneered this stuff when he returned from serving in WWII.

NOVA Convention revisited

Submitted by Susan Miller on Thu, 09/07/2006 - 14:26.

I found this quote. It is one of my favorites. I wanted to give Norm a chance to remember it or hear it for the first time. It is from the NOVA Convention. You might have been a teen then, Norm.

"If we see the earth as a spaceship and go further to invoke the comparison of a lifeboat, it is of course of vital concern to everybody on the boat if the crew or the passengers start polluting their supply of food and water, distributing supplies on a grossly inequitable basis, knocking holes in the bottom of the boat, or worst of all trying to blow the boat out from under us." Yep! Even though they adjusted their menu after the Supersize Me movie, they have slid back this summer by offering toy Hummers to children in Happy Meals. Read it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/10/business/media/10adco.html?_r=1&oref=s...

Dave Matthews Band and climate change changes

Submitted by Susan Miller on Sat, 07/29/2006 - 16:54.

My 18 year old, who yesterday learned to make a rain barrel, today turned me on to what one of his favorite band's is doing to lend a hand to the climate change awareness.
http://www.dmband.com/news/view/0c7d1589d4993d6f6263d71c8d1f9f5d The band is buying energy credits for all CO2 emissions for the band's touring activities since 1991. He's not the only corporation who is partnering with these guys.

Native
Energy is a privately held Native American energy company.  In August 2005, the Intertribal Council On Utility Policy (COUP) acquired a majority ownership interest in NativeEnergy on behalf of its member tribes, marking another significant step in the Great Plains tribes’ historic effort to power America with Native wind. Learn more about COUP’s investment in NativeEnergy

Visit LeftLuggage and view the dances there under "Videodances.tv". Click on the link for "Moment".

The movement is reminiscent of works I loved coaching when I directed The Repertory Project. The two bodies slip and slide through space carving it out and carving out and defining a relationship as they go. Is it obvious? No, but then neither is life.
