The Federal Aviation Administration has saved $15 million by migrating computers that manage air traffic flow to Linux, according to an announcement issued last week. The upgrade is part of a broader service-oriented architecture initiative that will replace proprietary traffic management systems with applications using Java, Web services, open-source software and Oracle products.

Bridge in France

The ODOT Cleveland Innerbelt Project's- Project Development Process (PDP) & Public Involvement Process (PIP) seem to be in limbo since the last public meeting on November 17, 2005.  ODOT's and City of Cleveland's PDP & PIP Schedule has not been followed and appears to be five (5) months behind schedule.  The "Alternatives Report" and the "Economic Impact Analysis" were scheduled to be completed in December 2005, for public review and comment.  THE REPORT AND ANALYSIS - DO NOT EXIST AT THIS TIME.  Even though the general public has been effectively removed from the public processes, a lot of activity has been going on since November 2005.  Below is a brief update on some of those activities.  Please visit www.neobridge.net to participate in this community discussion and to get the latest updates on OUR Cleveland Innerbelt Project.

What's Your Favorite Open Source Software Application?

Submitted by Charles on Thu, 05/18/2006 - 00:40.

Recently I read the cover article of PC World which advertised 101 Fabulous Freebies (www.find.pcworld.com/52516). It is a description of 101 software downloads or Internet based services that are free. A number of the software products listed are open source. Wikipedia defines Open Source software as "computer software available with its source code and under an open source license. Such a license permits anyone to study, change, and improve the software, and to distribute the unmodified or modified software."

OVA: Michael Wojno Shows Entrepreneurial Thinking is Working at Summa Enterprise Group

Submitted by Charles on Fri, 05/12/2006 - 17:59.

A view of Lockkepers at Canal and Rockside

The May meeting of the Ohio Venture Association at Lockkeepers featured presentations by two entrepreneurs seeking capital and the innovative story of Summa Enterprise Group.

OVA Board President Ben Calkins brought the meeting to order at Lockkeepers and allowed each person in attendance to introduce him or herself, following OVA's usual custom.

There were two Five-Minute Forum presentations. These speakers typically represent companies that are looking for start-up or expansion capital.

Sherry Aronson is president of Cure Systems, a company that provides enterprise software for hospitals that improves the quality of health care while enhancing cost efficiencies. Her company uses predictive analytics to anticipate and mitigate the risks in acute care environments. The result is a ten-fold return for its hospital clients and better outcomes for patients. The company has a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Health System. They are looking for additional capital to complete product development and intellectual property protection.

Prelude2Cinema becomes a Branded Entertainment Company

Submitted by prelude2cinema on Sat, 04/29/2006 - 13:32.

Digital Movie Company Prelude2Cinema has become a Branded Entertainment Company

To explore what that means, we first have to look at what is branded entertainment.

First, it looks like product placement, but it is not. It is the integration of a brand into a creative production. The integration must be done in a way that promotes the product, but also allows the creative production to entertain. This is a new field, but yet it has its roots in the beginning of movies and television.

University Circle Incorporated growing function, context and identity

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 04/23/2006 - 23:20.

For so many reasons, University Circle and its institutions and the surrounding neighborhood are core to what I value in NEO, and I look forward to seeing all that continually expand in significance to me, the region and world. But, University Circle is a small geographic domain, which must be optimized for 21 organizational stakeholders, and their 1,000,000s of stakeholders, including everyone associated with Case, University Hospitals, the VA, CIA, Cleveland Museum(s), Institute of Music, Orchestra, etc., and all others in the community.

In visioning for a better region and future here, consider a broader interpretation of University Circle from the small cultural, healthcare and university center of Cleveland to the center of the entire University Community of NEO.

help raise NEO's profile with a quick online effort...

Submitted by Sandy Kristin P... on Fri, 04/21/2006 - 08:30.

I'm going to try one more time, since my previous call for help only yielded two responses (thanks, you two!), and since there is some recently posted information on what is coming down the pipeline out of Seattle in terms of developing local sites based on 43places.
Here's what to do:  create a free account on 43things, add this goal to your list of 43 things to do, and make an entry under that goal with "Cleveland" in the title. That will get us on the list of the first 15 cities to receive local sites in the next iteration of 43places.
