I thought I'd post a few personal focus areas regarding 2006 and change efforts for the region.  We have so much to do, in so many areas.  In the spirit of the holistic view of sustainabilty and quality of life - I post my wish list for 2006 using our six-sphere framework:  these are broad outcomes, but i believe we can define specific action plans as discussion, dialogue, and inquiry continue.  Change, after all, begins the moment we ask the question!

Mayor Frank Jackson was sworn in as Cleveland's 56th mayor by Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones on January 2. It was a full house at East Technical High School with most of the city council members present to honor their former president. The new mayor received standing ovations as he entered the room, took the oath of office and after he finished his inspiring inaugural address.

In late November the Rockefeller Greenhouse turned into a sea of poinsettias, so colorful, so beautiful, it's almost beyond belief! I would n't try to count them but I would guess that there are close to 1,000 poinsettias of various sizes placed among the cacti and tropical plants that live in the greenhouse year-round.

Anyone who has spent much time in Louisiana knows the Blue Dog of artist George Rodrigue. A friend of mine sent me a link to a website for a signed poster by Rodrigue raising money for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. the Cleveland Colectivo is a group of like-minded friends, neighbors, and colleagues who have joined together for the purpose of collective giving.

Our mission is to strengthen our community through collective investments that identify and nurture innovative projects. We pool our funds and share our energy to invest it back into projects that we see as worthwhile and exciting in Cleveland. Each member contributes to The Colectivo quarterly and together we choose projects to support. Every month we gather to discuss ideas, learn about area initiatives and organizations, network with a growing circle of members, and continue building The Colectivo.

Went out to dinner with my mom and George Mateyo, Chairman of Carnegie Capital Asset Management Company. George apparently handles my mom's financial affairs and had been kind enough to take a look at my resume and
provide some advice as I was planning to move back to Cleveland from Japan. So we thought it would be nice to take him out to dinner, and I actually got a chance to meet him for the first time. Great guy. Funny, intelligent, direct.

Read in the Arts & Life section of the Plain Dealer that the Ohio Ballet is cancelling concerts, laying off its dancers and cutting its staff to a
barebones two. Apparently, the article was posted on Cleveland.com on December 16th, but I didn't see the article until today's paper.

CLEVELAND -Why has art always been such an important part of being human? How are new technologies shaping our minds and human creativity? How does digital technology affect how we remember the past, visualize the future, and ultimately, construct our own reality?

These and other questions that explore the impact of new technologies on contemporary life and culture will be addressed by eminent artists, cognitive scientists, museum educators, visual literacy experts and technologists at a free, public symposium, Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind on Thursday, January 19, 4-6 p.m. in the Bolton Theater at the Cleveland Play House, 8500 Euclid Avenue. This event complements the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland’s “All Digital” exhibition, on view January 20 through May 7, featuring the pioneering work of eight artists who use digital technologies in their work. Admission Free – Registration Suggested.

The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission will give a presentation of the Southern Bridge Alignment "Signature Bridge" plan to the Cleveland City Planning Commission on Friday, December 16.  The planning commission meeting will start at 9:00 am at Cleveland City Hall in Room 514.

My daughter is going with her grandmother to The Nutcracker on Saturday night at the Allen Theatre at Playhouse Square. For my daughter, moving to Cleveland will be a huge advantage over Okinawa (Prefecture Government, Tourist Bureau, Wikipedia ) in that she will have vastly more opportunity to see professional performances.

 

The Cache Shop is a thrift store in the basement of the Church of the Covenant on Euclid Avenue in University Circle. It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays and staffed by some very nice volunteers.They have special tables set up for the holidays with holiday decorations -- some vintage and all very cheap. 

Rollout of the "alternatives Report for the Cleveland Innerbelt - December 2005 (no deadline date available at this time).  A full report will be available via www.innerbelt.org, and at branches of the Cleveland Public Library, which will outline ODOT's Recommended Alternative.  ODOT will receive public comment on this report.

Gift giving can take many manifestations, tangible and intantible. The most valuable are sometimes less obvious.  Children, for example, revel in things in which they can participate and activity can assume many guises.  Advertising pushes products or activities but what about unpromoted activites?  The internet offers both small and large entrepreneurs a level playing field by enabling them equal access to consumers.  Thus the internet becomes the zone for entrepreneurs and participation.  Search engines connect everyone to everything, creating great opportunity.  Think how this changes the way children and their parents "shop."  Two things are true: It will never be the same but how and what we "shop" for is still being defined as an extension of the old ways.  Consider this, the early auto-mobiles' design were simply motor-powered carriages.  The same holds for innovation today:  the great spurt in innovation is yet to come, and its arrival will be hastened as more people participate on the internet.  Search engines enable people to leverage their intellectual property by lowering the barriers to consumers' access to products and services.

 

 

On November 17 an 18, I participated at the last three meetings regarding ODOT's “Recommended Preferred Alternatives” for the Cleveland Innerbelt Plan. My conclusion is that ODOT must hit the brakes and reconsider the Southern Bridge Alignment Plan (South Bridge) before it is too late... read the whole story at NEO Bridge today!
