Child Safety in Cleveland, the Suburbs, anywhere...common sense

Submitted by lmcshane on Sat, 04/14/2007 - 17:53.

I just got back from Estabrook Rec Center in beautiful Cleveland, Ohio (very nice pool, if only it was kept cooler).  There has never been much security at the Rec Centers, but I suspect that an incident must have recently occurred, because the "new" policy is to ID anyone over 16 and to require all personal information is submitted.  No one ID'd me (because they know me as the PITA who constantly complains about the pool temperature), but would I resent this infringement on my privacy?  No--because if it protects kids, it makes sense.

Is your apple notebook in need of a new look?

Submitted by Phillip Williams on Sat, 04/14/2007 - 15:07.

Pimp My Laptop
So I was just browsing the net as I like to do every so often.  I came accross a site that offers a way to bring a personal touch to your apple notebook.  I recommend checking out Pimp My Laptop.  Since they offer the ability to upload your own unique images and to make these high quality (safely removable) stickers for the lid of your notebook it would be really slick to have some local graphic artists create an image that rerpensents the neo-nation!

The 18th Annual Harvey Buchanan Lecture: bringing great art and ideas to Cleveland

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 04/09/2007 - 23:16.

The Asian art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art may be in storage, but this past Saturday, April 7th, Clevelanders had an exciting opportunity to learn about ancient and contemporary Chinese Art and a leading scholar's recent work in that area through the eighteenth annual Harvey Buchanan Lecture in Art History and the Humanities.

Cycling and Climate Change Debate

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 04/09/2007 - 12:12.

I went to a very good talk about climate change and the "Inconvenient Truth" at the Natural History Museum last week.  The dialogue was led by local businessman/ environmentalist Jeff Friedman. It occurs to me that cycling can be a stronger part of climate change discussion.

WORK IN ONE OF THE TOP CHILDREN'S HOSPITALS IN THE COUNTRY. I received a mailer from Merrit Hawkins trying to entice the former owner of my home, a  nurse, to move to Texas.   Selected by Money magazine as one of the "Top School Districts" in the United States was used as one of four draws.  The other three draws: four season weather, arts and culture, clean rivers and lakes for fishing and water sports.

FUTURE VIEW FROM CLEVELAND'S DIKE 14 - WITH FOOT NOTES

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 04/08/2007 - 16:09.

Actually, this is a view from the Peace Bridge which crosses the Niagara River at Buffalo.  The view is through my Greyhound window and shows the (8 – count the blades) Clipper turbines on the huge slag piles of the old Bethlehem Steel mill in Lackawanna.   Look how high the slag is over the ice on Lake Erie.  The turbine towers are over 300 feet tall, so the slag pile is at least 100 feet high - that's the way we used to do it - just dump our debris in the Great Lakes.  Cleveland did that too - Burke Lakefront Airport is on the old City dump.

water vs petrol/ corn here vs corn there

I stopped into the very end of David Morgenthaler's talk at CSU a few weeks ago. When I arrived I heard Phil Lane step to the mic to ask Morgenthaler if he was investing his venture capital in second tier carbon trading markets. Lane went onto describe sustainable businesses and innovations like his own innovation which he said is being built somewhere (not Cleveland) currently -- a car that gets 100 mpg. While Morgenthaler indicated that he did not have an interest in investing in carbon trading, he did say that he was interested in knowing more about Lane's auto invention.

It is easy to see why this might be difficult from onboard a barge. It must have been an amazing dance out there in the southwest where there are the massive farms Jeff pictured here on realneo.

Hi again

The first time my voice was on the air, I myself couldn't believe it. My friends also couldn't even imagine what had happened. I had to give them a copy of recorded tape containing that night's program so that I could prove that.

Now I have a page in the WHYS blog with my own words and my photo, and I'm sure I'm the only one from my country in that blog.
