Open Source Development and Documentation Project

Submitted by Boris Mann on Thu, 10/14/2004 - 01:31.

I've posted about this on my Bryght blog, but also wanted to mention it here.

The Open Source Development and Documentation Project (OSDDP for short) is doing some interesting work in combining open source methodologies and tools to connect students in Purdue's Professional Writing program with the open source community.

Of interest will be their introductory press release:

In a new initiative to foster what Dr. David Blakesley calls "networked
learning," Purdue University students interact with new people and new
technologies to provide valuable open source
documentation. Students in a variety of English courses in the
Professional Writing major will study open source software, talk to its
designers and users, use the software themselves, then write and test
user documentation, help organizations promote their software in the
wider community, and even develop action plans for deploying such
software in new business and academic ventures.

Good of the process

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 10/12/2004 - 01:57.

The best
part of the REALNEO project to date is working much more intimately with open
source projects and leaders, and the personal freedom and insight that offers
me. Anyone in NEO who gets involved with REALNEO will share in this wonderful
experience of evolution, learning and empowerment – those left behind are truly
deprived in important ways.

I’m very
impressed with the technologies we’re assembling, and I’m enjoying getting off
legacy, proprietary systems as fast as possible. We’re running on Linux, and
Apache, and my SQL, and PHP, browsing in Firefox. We’re using Drupal and
starting to work with a half dozen other great projects that are making IT
better for the world, and the world better for all people – this is where Earth
is being reengineered by the next generation. And no Microsoft anywhere… no cost
anywhere, yet …I’ll pay Bryght and others for enhancements along the way, but that is
really a contribution to a greater cause.

Drupal Developers challenge usability expert

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 10/08/2004 - 03:28.

The following message and links really drive home the beauty of open source, and the exciting dynamics of the Drupal community – the open source project we’re using as the CMS - content management system – at the core of the REALNEO community.

You’ll see that a computer user experience expert posted a criticism of all CMS systems and the Drupal community responded with a real open source challenge – Drupal developers offer to volunteer dozens of free hours of effort to fix anything this expert identifies as usability issues with Drupal – and all this free effort will make Drupal better for us. We are at the heart of this vibrant community, as one of the developers involved in this challenge is working on our project for Bryght. All this insight building is happening in the public space at the links below!

Thoughts on Election - Cynicism and Politics Have Always Been Linked

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 01/09/2004 - 09:53.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
