Workforce DevelopmentTop 5 Things to Remember When Reading Stories About "Cures" and "Breakthroughs" and Medical MartsSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 03/16/2008 - 21:28.
Headlines in current Cleveland media promote a Medical Mart and Convention Center to cure our ill economy. The Plain Dealer quotes Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora saying "We're looking for a tremendous economic boon - something we haven't had for many years here".... and fellow Commissioner Tim Hagan saying "This is a turning point and a defining moment for this community". Such bold claims make me think of The Top 5 Things to Remember When Reading Stories about Alzheimer’s Disease “Cures” or “Research Breakthroughs”:

Opportunities for pregnancy & birth in 2008Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 03/10/2008 - 23:38.
03/15/2008 - 14:00 03/15/2008 - 17:00 Etc/GMT-5 When Evelyn and I learned we were expecting Claes, three years ago, we started exploring local natural childbirth and child support resources, and have most enjoyed the getting to know the people with the Cleveland BirthNetwork, which is part of a national organization has a mailing list and holds regular local meet-ups and casual events... I strongly recommend expecting families to attend one of their activities, like the following... 03/13/2008 - 17:30 03/13/2008 - 19:30 Etc/GMT-5 The Intergenerational School is holding a Wine & Cheese Open House (with Student‐Led Tours!), this Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm - and I strongly encourage those interested in innovation in education and aging to attend. Read through the whole invitation to learn more about the school - it is astounding, as are the founders... Cathy and Peter Whitehouse. This is the school that I hope to expand in the former Hough Bakeries complex, as the anchor for redevelopment of the surrounding neighborhood, so if you are interested in that project then you are interested in TIS.... I hope to see you there Thursday... be sure to RSVP! Location

In living and working around University Circle, it occurs to me how stupid it is that there are literally five or six police forces operating within overlapping turfs... Cleveland, University Circle, Case, University Hospitals, and the Clinic each have significant police forces. In addition, Cuyahoga County has patrols in the area... all intersecting within a mile of each other... and you are probably as likely to get shot within a mile of that intersection as anywhere in America.

History being written right, today... Tech Czar on Medical MartSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 17:30.
I spotted a link on BFD to Tech Czar Michael DeAloia's fascinating write up on the Medical Mart, so much in our pocketbooks and news every day, in real neo. Well, it seems we have one community leader interested to set the records straight today and from now on, in his world, on his blog, about his world, which is fascinating. I'm glad to see Michael more active than ever, leading the community, since leaving City Hall, and I appreciate the honest facts about the Medical Mart that are missing everywhere else. Read this tidbit below and you'll link through for the rest...

Blood, ink, marker One of the greatest times when the Cleveland School May Show is the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Annual Student Independent Exhibition, now in its 62 year. SUB-PRIME TO SUB-TERRANEAN - AMNESTY IS IN OUR INTERESTSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 16:32.
One minor question involving subprime vacant houses which I haven't seen asked much is: Where did the occupants go? And the answer I can tell you is: UNDERGROUND. When a foreclosure takes place, and a lender gets a judgment against a homeowner/borrower, that judgment is good in the courts for decades – in some states for 21 years.
FROZEN PIPES BREAKING ALL OVER NORTH EAST OHIOSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 02/07/2008 - 16:05.
When you don't have the money to keep the heat on, and it gets cold, the pipes freeze.
And break. Then when it warms up like it did over the past two days, the pipes thaw out. And water floods everything. And when the building is filled up, the water pours out under the doors and into the street - just like it is doing at Sweet Daddy's.

COFFEE RUN - PORT COLBURNE IN LATE JANUARYSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 23:00.
Having worked in the construction business for years, I got so I could tell when a Diesel was rev'd a little too high. So here I was on the Welland Canal in late January asking - was it the ice breaking that was forcing the revs? - or was it time for a coffee break? It was the Tim Horton's coffee!
BUFFALO, NY SAVES STRUCTURAL SKELETON OF BUILDING SIMILAR TO BREUER'S CLEVELAND AMERITRUST TOWERSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 01/21/2008 - 19:26.
The 15 story Dulski Federal Building in Buffalo, New York is undergoing a down to the steel skeleton re-hab. This building was constructed in the early 1970’s, and besides the time of its construction, shares other similarities with the Breuer designed Ameritrust Tower built in 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio.

WILL MYERS UNIVERSITY BECOME AN F1 VISA FACTORY? WILL “STUDENTS” WORK AT THE CLEVELAND CLINIC?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/24/2007 - 18:06.
On December 14, 2007 Judge Gaul presented University of Northern Virginia LLC’s president, Mr. Ho, to Myers’ students and the media at Myers University in Midtown, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Ho’s English is a bit difficult to follow, but what I made out was that Mr. Ho had in the past been a professor, and he still considers his relationship to the various for profit schools he operates as that of a professor – Mr. Ho is not currently teaching as a professor, but is negotiating the take over of the Myers Board of Trustees. As of December 20 Mr. Ho had appointed eight of his candidates to the “Board” with Judge Gaul’s approval. Mr. Ho (center with glasses), and his associate Mr. Lee (on right with glasses and striped tie) went on to say that it was their intention to expand the student population at Myers by attracting foreign students – with a goal of about 2,500 students.
