Incentive-based Recycling

Submitted by lmcshane on Sat, 10/20/2007 - 15:28.

The City of Cleveland has reimplemented curbside recycling.  I want it to work.  It should work, but we also need to consider incentivesPhiladelphia has the right idea.

No swimming

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 10/07/2007 - 11:18.

Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to float in.  Yesterday, I attended a wedding shower for two people who represent everything hopeful about this region.  Smart, smart people.  My smart friend's smart mom arranged the party at the Henn House in Sims Park along the lake.  Henn House has been renovated by volunteers who see the value of fixing and restoring.  After the party, I found myself in the same position as another woman, who wandered down to the beach to admire the sun

Demolition Patrol

Submitted by lmcshane on Sat, 09/29/2007 - 09:02.

I've enlisted the kids in the neighborhood to let me know of the most recent demolitions.  West 34th St. is the most recent victim of these random hits (Address 3872, south off Denison).

Creating these gaping holes is not how to save the city.  If there was some actual vision or plan to make use of these demolished properties, then I could see the rationale.  To the people living with the bulldozers--it's as if someone has dropped a bomb on their street.  (I will have to buy a digital camera to record the devastation a la Jeff Buster).

Join the Club

Submitted by lmcshane on Mon, 09/24/2007 - 09:55.

Like millions of Americans, Oprah has been diagnosed with thyroid disease.  We know that there is an environmental stressor causing this autoimmune failure.  Maybe, now there will be more of an attempt to pinpoint the cause and spare our children from this silent epidemic.  It mostly affects women (due to body fat?) So ask yourself, what do we add to our water?  It's not just an urban problem--it's a suburban problem, too.  It's not just a Lake Erie problem, it's a Lake Michigan problem, too.  So, maybe the soccer moms will want to do something about it?  Especially, if Oprah leads the charge.

Expect more

Submitted by lmcshane on Fri, 09/21/2007 - 19:17.

Expect more stories like the incredible sink hole that swallowed my backyard.   The infrastructure of Cleveland and the inner ring suburbs is crumbling.  Instead of repeating the same mistakes, Cuyahoga County needs to find a way to reimburse these homeowners and collectively allow these stream corridors to revert to their natural function.  It is certainly the most cost effective way of fixing this problem and it will serve the dual purpose of cleaning our waters and regreening our community.

Question of the day? Noble experiment or futile effort?

Has REALNEO been a noble experiment doomed to failure?  People tune in from all over the world, but apparently the center will not hold.

Standard of Success

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 09/02/2007 - 08:18.

Today's Plain Dealer again chronicles the "horror" of living in the city and validates the decision of all the suburbanites that have chosen to flee.  Sister Regina touches on the crux of the real problem in her column today.  Standards.  The school district is changing the standard for success by imposing a dress code.  The City of Cleveland needs to set the same standard for our neighborhoods.  The new second district police commander gets it.

GIMP headers

Submitted by lmcshane on Thu, 08/09/2007 - 07:34.

Norm--I LOVE today's GIMP header of a flooded Rockefeller Park.  I think of Masumi Hayashi and John Jackson.   And, it makes me want to reread Love in the Ruins by Walker Percy.

How can we refer back to these images?  Do you have them stored somewhere accessible?  Are they titled?

Saving our history-Preservation pays off

This week's Crain's Cleveland Business commends the efforts of Convivium33's Alenka Banco and the design team of Nottingham-Spirk. Preserving the past to give us hope for the future. Bravo.

From Crain's Cleveland --Repeating history Monday August 6, 2007
For the business owners and others who opt to bring new life into old buildings, high costs, years of work and a slew of other challenges await. Is all that time and trouble worth it? Yes, insist some who have renovated rather than built new.

The Tyler Elevator building project is another encouraging story.

Just a guess

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 19:41.

My guess--the most recent member to sign on to RealNEO is Stefanie Spear--I think her maiden name was Penn.   Am I right?   I saw a copy of Earthwatch today as I met up with Lois Moss to promote Walk and Roll Cleveland.  The writing seemed familiar to me.  I lived through Cleveland in the nineties and remembered a highly literate magazine named Affinity.  Is this the same Stefanie?  So, I thought--Cleveland Public Library.  Surely, we must have archived a local environmental publication? Wrong! So, I checked www.worldcat.org.   And here's what I found.  Affinity.\by Stefanie Penn Language: English  Type: Periodical

My sister and her husband just returned from an arts residency at Masereel Centrum.  This is a photo of the lovely courtyard and living quarters provided to the artists.  The deadline to apply for next year is August 1st, 2007.  Art residencies...hmmm...what an idea???  Where do artists want to live while they are in Cleveland??

angle no more

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 18:41.

Our information society is in a state of flux.  I am sad that angle's demise had to be a part of the change.  The challenge will be to maintain any local print publication format.  If you can help change the model for a reincarnation of ANGLE magazine please mail a hardcopy proposal to Janus Small, Janus Small Associates, 3220 Green Rd. Cleveland OH 44122 or email your proposal to hollychrist [at] gmail [dot] com.

Who is saving our local history?

Submitted by lmcshane on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 14:29.

Cleveland Public Library and Cuyahoga County Public Library subscribe to a database Newsbank that receives a feed from the Plain Dealer.  The Plain Dealer articles are somewhat archived and indexed, but the Sun newspapers (published by PD) are not indexed, except by their own site (ditto PD for their article archive).  The Sun newspapers are not included in this feed.  For future historians and researchers, we need to push for better indexing and archiving of our local stories.  The microfilm is kept at CCPL and CPL but how will we find stories such as this one in the Westside Sun News?  Ohio City Chief hired by Stark.

EVERYONE thinks it's a great idea

Submitted by lmcshane on Sat, 06/02/2007 - 07:16.

So declares Bonnie Teeuwen ODOT's returning District 12 chief in this month's AAA Motorist, as she describes the Opportunity Corridor, the proposed highway from East 55th St. to University Circle.  Well, count me as one person, who is not everyone.  I think the plan stinks.  I want to see a return to civilized boulevards in this city.  Real tree-lined boulevards. I think that there should be a way to make federal and state funds available to restore our boulevards (to include bikes): East Boulevard, West Boulevard, Martin Luther King Boulevard, Lakeshore Boulevard, Clifton Boulevard..And redesign other thoroughfares that should be boulevards : Chester, Superior, Detroit, Broadway, Harvard-Denison, Miles and Pearl.  We need to size down, not up.  And, what's the point of the Euclid Corridor, if we are building a parallel corridor for the rich folks?

Toys

We attended a Memorial Day ceremony at the forgotten founders Denison cemetery along Garden Court.   Rick Nicholson read Logan's order and Rev Wilde and Rev Andrews officiated over benedictions.  Addy Cummins played Amazing Grace on the recorder. A beautiful day to remember.  I ran across this obituary and it made me smile.  Click on Mickey for the full story and read the tributes from the ladies in this great toymaker's life.
