West Creek Greenway and Trail Project - Public Meetings
The West Creek Preservation Committee, in partnership with the Cleveland Metroparks and the consulting firm Floyd Browne Group, will be hosting a final set of public meetings this August regarding the potential development of the West Creek Greenway and Trail System, which would link Cleveland Metroparks West Creek Reservation to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park and other parks and points of interest.

This is a shot taken over the breakwater last Wednesday, July 11, 2007. I thought it would be fun to see it up against Norm's Realneo Header. I'm not sure where Norm's photo was taken - are there any of the same spinnakers in the two photos?

Rush hours are abhorrent everywhere (forget inconvenience to us humans - the exhaust is killing the globe), from Boston's SouthEast"Expressway" to the Cleveland Inner Belt and "dead man's curve" (which ODOT will "fix" - right?) to the interstate 5 in LA
But here is a view of a rush hour in Cleveland that is really exhilarating.

From the Washington Post article below "Through much of the 20th century, lead in
U.S. paint and gasoline fumes poisoned toddlers as they put contaminated hands in their mouths. The consequences on crime, Nevin found, occurred when poisoning victims became adolescents. Nevin does not say that lead is the only factor behind crime, but he says it is the biggest factor."

I would like to add that this and the other audacious billboard are the only procoal billboards on the PA turnpike and they are both adjacent to the wind turbines out that way; In fact if you squint really hard you can see the turbines in the fog.

Now this down to earth engineering plan to rectify the natural state of the Cuyahoga River is an operation I could get behind long before I could support Bill Mason's wind turbines "about 3 miles out on Lake Erie".

Here's the photo of the Breuer Building which respectfully reflects the Breuer neighboring buildings. Where has the Cleveland Foundation been during the discussion of the removal of the Marcel Breuer Building out of downtown Cleveland, Ohio?
The CF hasn't been shy about lobbying for wind energy, for which the Foundation is to be applauded. And the wind energy issue certainly has a political side – the other side from the republican oil and gas industry. Why doesn't the CF jump in on this historic preservation issue?

Beauty inside the mind of the beholder? sure, but education from our peers who know the difference helps get us up the ladder of appreciation. Here's a shot from the plebian street...GOT UGLY? Marcel Breuer – do you get it?

If local eyes are shut to the value of the Breuer, perhaps this iconic eye of the Building will be recognized by a sophisticated developer as one reason to remove and reassemble the stone and precast concrete elements hung on the steel core of this 1970 structure.

Introduction : Ingenuity Fest 2007 : A Sustainable Future
Here is a refined draft for the A Sustainable Future exhibit to be curated by yours truly at the Nance School of Business July 19-22 along with the other Technology hubs. Sustainability will be the 'glue that binds' in many respects, the various other hubs encompassing the wide array of technologies - from Fuel Cells to Nanotechnology to advanced Bioscience. It is only fitting that Technology be given such prominence this year at the Festival of ART and TECHNOLOGY and the timing is perfect for this to be the true coming out party for an epic festival ! see: www.ingenuitycleveland.org

I received this today from the Ohio City Bicycle Co-op:
I'm doing an unprecedented thing for me, and sending this to everyone I email (Sorry if you consider this "spam") because I think it's important that folks get together on this -- especially after reading Al Gore's Op-Ed in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/01/opinion/01gore.html
Some of you are not in Cleveland, but look at this invitation anyway, please, and if you're not, I think you can find an event near you by clicking on the "find an event" at the top, by "event central"... I feel strongly that we can all learn something from this kind of event, so here's the boilerplate from Live Earth, and if I don't see you (with your bicycle, I hope !) at Great Lakes Brewery on Saturday, I hope you will attend an event near you if you can:
I hope you'll do something fun and meaningful for the planet this Saturday -- if not by attending a Live Earth party, then by riding your bike somewhere!

Yes, it's true. After 15 successful years of promoting the design of ecological cities, EcoCity Cleveland is merging with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. This is a fantastic opportunity to align the resources of two strong and respected organizations — and accelerate the transformation of Northeast Ohio toward greater sustainability.
In the next month, I will become the director of a new Center for Regional Sustainability at the Museum. Other core EcoCity staff members also will transfer to the Museum. Our work and key projects, including this GreenCityBlueLake site, will continue. And, drawing upon the scientific expertise of the Museum, we will be launching a new climate change project to help reduce the region's carbon footprint.

If Ohio can’t make the move on its own, perhaps the federal government will force the issue. Senator Bingaman (D-NM) is trying again (after an unsuccessful attempt in Jun ’05) to require a national renewable portfolio standard. The proposed RPS would require that 15% of the country’s electricity come from wind, solar and other renewable energy sources by 2020. Read more
I may be late and wrong here, you guys may have discussed this long ago, but is anyone familiar with Apollo Alliance, headed up by a Jerome Ringo? There was an article in the Thursday PD business section, front page.
Along with the obvious environmental reasons for which this caught my eye, it was also the fact that Ringo is an African American. Af-Am are not always seen in the media as being part of the environmental movement, and within the Af-Am community, in part because of this lack of "face", the lay person may feel it is not our issue or concern, and is just about saving the whales. Increasingly, there are beginning to be more mainstream stories that include persons of color that are dealing with environmental issues and environmental justice. So on that tip, seeing Ringo's face was a good thing.
Making the environmental movement relevant to the day-to-day lives of all persons in poverty regardless of colors, and as it, poverty, tends to fall out with greater impact on people of color, to make it relevant to them, has not always been communicated, or at least ignored by the media. Poor folks and folks of color typically don't give a crap about the Steve Irwin's of the world saving some crocodiles. They need to know how to save their own kids. Seeing Ringo and others (there is a Af-Am woman in the Bronx that just got some award for urban environmentalism ...) can help people in highly depressed areas, see why they have to think about the environment as well - including jobs!
... HEY HERE"S A THOUGHT ... A wind Turbine or solar panels manufacturing facility in the unused portions of the GE plant / buildings here in East Cleveland or some other close by East Cleveland / Cleveland edge plant or warehouse (Think Ivanhoe and Coit Road and the like ...)
But when you do boil it all down, it still has to be about the strength and rigor of the work of the organization itself. I just found it kind of interesting that Apollo is said to have been "...Founded in 2003 by the United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club." Strange bedfellows at first glance.
But then again, we NEED to have more "strange bedfellows" about a LOT of issues facing us in this world today.
