IMPROVE YOUR SOIL THIS FALLSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 10/29/2007 - 11:05.
This Fall, rather than raking and blowing those autumn leaves off your lawn and garden why don’t you just mow them into your lawn and leave them in your garden.

“Battery Park” is a multi square block development on West 72 south of the CSX tracks just on the bluff above Edgewater park and the Shoreway.
Right next to Battery Park is the old Detroit neighborhood where there are numerous vacant houses.
NEW STREET SIGN – WHAT’S THE MESSAGE? (“anecdote” 2 for J. Murray)Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 10/25/2007 - 14:48.
Last week when I walked by the post in the photo above there was a street sign on the post. Today the sign is gone and the two bolts which had fastened the sign to the post are laying in the grass at the base of the post.

Follow The Money... who decides which brownfields are cleaned?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 10/24/2007 - 20:47.
There are many big industrial sites around Cleveland I pass regularly - some are active brownfields, like the Flats, and some are abandoned. Some feature Cleveland Landbank signs and are in stages of redevelopment... the one featured here is on the West Side of Cleveland, at Bishop Road and Madison, by W. 117, and the city has clearly spent $millions clearing up this huge property of many acres.

VISCERAL BUSINESSES - THE GUTS OF OUR ECONOMYSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 10/22/2007 - 21:20.
So when I walked by Joe, at the door taking a breather, asked..."you from Boston?" Well, I had visited Boston (and I had spaced that the Indians were up against them just then) - so I thought the guy was able to see into the future. Stable on my feet, I walked into the All State Barber College, and l felt that HERE was the healthy, real economic future.
Incentive-based RecyclingSubmitted by lmcshane on Sat, 10/20/2007 - 15:28.
The City of Cleveland has reimplemented curbside recycling. I want it to work. It should work, but we also need to consider incentives. Philadelphia has the right idea.

Frankencar?Submitted by Charles Frost on Sat, 10/20/2007 - 07:49.
This thing better have a regenerative-braking powered mini-fridge. In what has to be one of the weirdest looking things to come out of Canada since our very own Lloyd (j/k Lloyd!), an enterprising Canuck has taken two Priuses, welded them together, and made either what has to be the greenest limo in the world or the most gas-guzzling Prius - depending on how you look at it. However, the Canadian inventor/mad scientist says the car still gets 50mpg even with the added weight. We don't know if that is before or after the limo reaches its 10 seat capacity, but it sure beats the heck out of those hideous Hummer limo monstrosities.

Ann Arbor, Michigan has instituted a smart tiered method of taxing residential and commercial properties for storm water costs – the more impervious surface you have on your property, the more storm water abatement tax you pay. Check it out Here

CLEVELAND MIRAGESubmitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 10/17/2007 - 23:13.
I walked out on the Lorain Street Bridge with one photo in mind (red socks hanging out to dry - I’ll get that photo blogged tomorrow) - and then up the bridge slope comes a fellow with no legs powering his wheel chair with his arms. The afternoon was warm and the sun intensely bright. I began to get a head ache behind my right eye. Cleveland’s central city rose starkly over a Vermont like grove of golding trees.
BEGGARS IN CLEVELAND?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 10/17/2007 - 12:03.
There's a new sidewalk sign in Public Square (and elsewhere downtown). Another sign that our society is dismantling itself into them and us.

Wal-Mart’s Sustainability SummitSubmitted by Charles Frost on Mon, 10/15/2007 - 18:54.
Last week's Live Better Sustainability Summit, held just outside of Bentonville, Arkansas, was yet another in what seems to be an accelerating series of "whoda thunk" moments. Bentonville, of course, is hometown to Wal-Mart, which sponsored the event, a daylong conclave that brought together more than a thousand people to a nearby convention center. It was all part of Wal-Mart's latest crusade: to "drive profitable product innovation" into its supply chain.I had the opportunity to attend, not as a participant but as an observer, one of a small handful of media and bloggers admitted to the event. (Another was Sami Grover of Treehugger, who's report can be found here.)

Just How Bad Was this Summer's Arctic Melting?by Jeremy Elton Jacquot, Los Angeles on 10.12.07 That bad. More about the report's executive summary after the jump.According to Carbon Equity's latest report, the Arctic ice caps are facing a much grimmer future than that originally projected by the IPCC - which has been accused of watering down its recommendations due to political pressure. Some of the more salient findings include:
• Climate change impacts are happening at lower temperature increases and more quickly than projected.

CAMERAS SHOOT MAYOR JACKSON AND DR. SANDERSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 10/12/2007 - 16:52.
City of Cleveland Mayor Jackson and Cleveland Metropolitan School District Superintendent Eugene Sanders held a “news conference” in the Mayor’s Chambers this afternoon. The security magnetometer at the Mayor’s City Hall second floor office suite doorway sensed metal (my camera?) and buzzed when I went in, but it buzzed for everyone. No one was minding it. Anyway, I’m sure there was not any concealed carry in the City Hall because the yellow sign on the front door of the City Hall said “guns not allowed”.

When you visit downtown Chicago or Toronto you can feel those places are more civically healthy than downtown Cleveland.
