University Circle Incorporated growing function, context and identity

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 04/23/2006 - 22:20.

For so many reasons, University Circle and its institutions and the surrounding neighborhood are core to what I value in NEO, and I look forward to seeing all that continually expand in significance to me, the region and world. But, University Circle is a small geographic domain, which must be optimized for 21 organizational stakeholders, and their 1,000,000s of stakeholders, including everyone associated with Case, University Hospitals, the VA, CIA, Cleveland Museum(s), Institute of Music, Orchestra, etc., and all others in the community.

In visioning for a better region and future here, consider a broader interpretation of University Circle from the small cultural, healthcare and university center of Cleveland to the center of the entire University Community of NEO.

Dr. Gregory Eastwood, Interim President Introduces Himself to the Case Community

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Tue, 04/18/2006 - 12:40.

On Monday April 17th at 4 p.m. in Strosacker Auditorium Dr. Gregory Eastwood, Interim President, introduced himself to the Case Community (students, faculty and staff). The event was also broadcast live via webcast. I tried to listen to the webcast, which was frustrating due technology problems  (I am not sure if it was on my end or Case's). I listened again the next day thanks to the archived copy -- much more satisfying result. If you missed out please check the link.

WARNING! TOO MANY NEO BRAINS CONTAIN HARMFUL AMOUNTS OF LEAD

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 04/04/2006 - 15:13.

A series of important events, held at the City Club on 05.04.2006, brought to the attention of 100s of community leaders the realities of the "silent epidemic" of lead poisoning in America and NEO today. The highlight was Dr. Lanphear's presentation of important research findings surfacing such shocking insight as:

  • the average I.Q.s of American adults (and you reading this) were most certainly diminished from past lead exposure (especially if you lived in the days of leaded gas)... average I.Q in America is going up, as we eradicate lead
  • 1,000s of NEO children are exposed to hazardous levels of lead in their daily lives today
    • Low income people are most adversely impacted but children in all socio-economic classes are poisoned
    • Often affluent homeowners poison their own families by renovating while living at home, or not properly cleaning after renovations
  • Children pay for lead exposure through diminished productivity throughout life - in very high doses, victims lose their lives (there was a case of this in the past few weeks).
  • Over the past century, American society and government have not addressed lead  effectively, so Americans and our society today must accept responsibilty for the diminished capacities of untold 100,000s of victims and we must pay a $multi-biillion cost for remediation, as well as suffer lead-poison related societal problems like high crime and failing education systems, to say the least.
  • Most tragic, the overall problem was largely avoidable (Europe outlawed lead in the early 1900s), and most individual cases of lead poisoning today are avoidable. If you have or care about kids, you need to read more...

Dr. Lanphear is a world expert on many aspects of this topic, and the City Club will be the place Tuesday for the cutting edge insight on raising healthy kids in NEO.

Hundert Resigns

the following was sent out in an email this morning to the CASE community ...

PRESIDENT HUNDERT'S LETTER TO THE CASE WESTERN RESERVE COMMUNITY

Dear Members of the Case Western Reserve University Community,

Last night I informed our Board of Trustees that I will step down as President of the University effective September 1, 2006.  I have been tremendously grateful for the Board's support throughout my four years; they are an extraordinary group of people.  There is much I would still like to accomplish for our university, but I have reluctantly concluded that the continuing tension on campus is too distracting to the advancement of our university.  I believe a change in leadership will provide the best opportunity for the many important groups across our community to come together and build on the progress we have made in recent years.  I would like to call on everyone to take this moment to join together to advance Case Western Reserve as one great university.  Go to http://blog.case.edu/casepoint/ to continue letter.

Case, after the levee broke

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 03/04/2006 - 15:17.

With the demand by Case Professor Krauss for a no-confidence vote against the Case president and provost, the levee broke flooding Case with the community sewage brimming its highest offices since hurricane Lewis smacked NEO several years ago, demanding the complete reorganization of Case. The rains since from Lewis' further public contempt for Case overflowed all the protection the president and board could retain, and now the Case community is in ruins.

Proposal for Case: Add Cowen - Follow Tulane Blueprint

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 03/04/2006 - 12:52.

I have a proposal for several actions Case may take to become the "World's Most Powerful Learning Environment", as Hundert proposes.

The first action is for the Case board and senior administration to form a panel of Blue Ribbon Advisors who are qualified and able to develop for the University a renewal plan. The panel must be expert in the subject, globally-respected and ready to begin immediately. Therefore, for the panel I recommend:

William G. Bowen, president, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, president emeritus, Princeton University

William R. Brody, president, The Johns Hopkins University

James J. Duderstadt, president emeritus, University of Michigan

Harvey Fineberg, president, The Institute of Medicine, The National Academies

Malcolm Gillis, president emeritus, Rice University

Eamon Kelly, president emeritus, Tulane University

Scott Cowen, president, Tulane University

Farris W. Womack, chief financial officer emeritus, University of Michigan
