A good discussion appears this morning in the Akron Beacon Journal on the emergence in Akron/Canton of a new effort to promote networks of entrepreneurs. The mere fact that the meeting took place -- and the published transcripts appear in the paper-- provide some sense that this effort will succeed. Read more. Read the transcript. Ohio Congressman Bob Ney is certainly entitled to have the facts proved before he’s considered guilty, but it’s a disservice to voters to claim the charges against him are “just politics” or “the way things work in DC.”  By asserting that these allegations are “the way things get done,” supporters drag politics and government lower and give disgusted voters more reasons to give up on government.  To really understand the accusations and why the allegations are more than routine, readers need to understand the nature of the charges and the facts at hand.

But let's face it, if there ever were a mirror for the people of Akron, this would be it. Hell this IS Akroness in all it's glory. That said, it's only fair that once every two years or so we get our just dues. This time our just dues mean David Giffels finally pimped us a bit in Akron's daily BJ. And to think we didn't even have to whore ourselves out too much to get it. It seems somehow mystical that our 'moment in the sun', as it were, came on the tails of telling some dumb chick how dumb she is. Perhaps there really is a God. Still doesn't make Pat Robertson any better though.

Cool People from Akron is an Akron based online community that is devoted to independant news, views, and discussion such as it effects our local scene. We have an active forum, concert and event calendar, galleries, and more. We are relatively new but offer an open, uncensored place for our local town. Kind of like the Alternet of Akron. The June 2nd WVIZ Ideas TV program explored what makes a city “cool�, by considering the former “Rubber City� of Akron's efforts to understand Generation X (folks born 1961-1981), which is the “Gold Standard� in the knowledge based economy. Akron is the first city in this region to analyze this critical economic development sector, with their Chamber of Commerce hiring the world-experts on the subject, Next Generation Consulting, of Madison, WI. Led by their Gen X CEO, Rebecca Ryan, Akron is comparing its Generation X appeal versus that of many of America’s most vibrant cities, like San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Minneapolis.

The City of Akron has taken the lead in Northeast Ohio to understand Generation Xers in their community, how to appeal to them, and how to transform their economy as a community inclusive of young and old for leadership in the New Economy. Related insight is posted here.

With a major expansion project about to commence at the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is easy to forget about the exciting expansion project going on only 45 minutes away at the Akron Museum of Art. Access to the Arts’s “Arts on the Air� program Monday, March 14th brought much deserved attention to this project through an interview with Dr. Mitchell Kahan, Director of the Akron Museum of Art and Tom Wiscombe, Project Partner of Coop Himmelb(l)au, the architectural firm that designed the addition to The Museum. Steven Litt, the Arts and Architecture Critic of the Plain Dealer conducted the interview before a live audience of approximately 100 in the Ritz-Carlton.

Could cultural consciousness icon David Byrne truly " PowerPoint"? Co-founder of the groundbreaking and fascinating Talking Heads, Byrne is known for creating globally relevant music and art, making it surprising he would go on tour championing the close-minded "Office" anti-intellect of big brother champion Microsoft, the icon of anti-culture. Yet, as Byrne posts to his website, I have been working with PowerPoint, the ubiquitous presentation
software, as an art medium for a number of years. It started off as a
joke (this software is a symbol of corporate salesmanship, or lack
thereof) but then the work took on a life of its own as I realized I
could create pieces that were moving, despite the limitations of the
"medium." Before the talk, attendees were treated to some of
Byrne's EEEI PowerPoint art project, which was striking.

Ideastream's 03.06.05 Ideas program took an interesting look at economic development issues and opportunities in Akron, and how the city seeks to raise it's "cool" factor. They featured Elizabeth Sheeler, who returned home to Akron from Boston to work with the Akron Art Museum and ArtCetera because she feels she can have a bigger impact in her smaller home town than in a big city  she has started an after work arts party and networking scene in Akron - part of making the scene cooler there. The objective is to make Akron desirable to Gen-Xers  and the need is serious. Rebecca Ryan, an economic development consultant from Madison, WI, based Next Generation Consulting, has been hired to lead the Akron community to focus on their Gen-X quality of life  she notes only 4% of NEOs 18-24 have loyalty to this region vs. 25% nationwide, and only 35% of NEO residents in general feel there is good opportunity here for the young, vs. 69% nationwide. Gen-Xers are needed to replace Baby Boomers as they retire from the workforce, and Gen-Xers are the innovators needed to fuel the future of the economy, so not satisfying the Gen-Xers is very foolish.
