Wind Turbine Towers - could be made 7 meters in diameter in vertical slicesSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 11/19/2009 - 21:50.
This is the base section of a chimney - I caught it going east on I90 in Pennsylvania. This section weights 46,000lbs and is about 22 feet in diameter. Wind turbine towers are fabricated at about 13 feet in diameter so they can be shipped on the interstate and clear the bridges which are about 13'6". But this chimney section demonstrates that there is another way to build wind turbine towers with much larger diameters (albeit shorter sections). Larger diameters could have benefits in the construction of much taller wind turbine towers, and stiffer towers, though with more bolting and connection issues due to the shorter length and larger diameters. This was an ATCO job. Anyone know where the final destination is for this section?
