Cleveland's GEM

My friend and all-around pundit, Lissa (she speaks Italian), pointed this out to me--the Cultural Gardens are alive with song this summer.

We can all channel Caruso to join the operatic chorus in the Italian Garden on June 27!

Opera in Italian Garden

Italian Cultural Garden presents "Opera in the Italian Garden" on Friday, June 27, 2008 from 7 through 8:30 PM at the Garden, 990 East Blvd. "Opera Per Tutti" will be performing arias, duets, and ensembles from operas by Bellini, Mozart and Verdi in addition to familiar songs from La Boheme and La Traviata. Seating will be available on the East Blvd level on a first come, first served basis. For more information contact Joyce Mariani at 440-461-2806.

I will post more about this collaboration, but here's more to AMORE about Cleveland.

Opera per tutti

The event was spectacular.  Despite, the cloudbursts, the show went on.  Joyce Mariani and the other event organizers, especially, the magnificent Opera per Tutti performers led by Andrea Anelli, deserve our praise and appreciation.

One person who also especially deserves major appreciation--Lois Moss.  If not for her organizing the first Walk and Roll Cleveland event in the Cultural Gardens two years ago, I seriously doubt we would have seen the outstanding community event witnessed tonight.

This event proved that every cultural garden should have a summer night to celebrate our diverse cultural offerings.

Tonight was a passionate bread and chocolate evening felt by all  "Italians-at-heart," from all shades of the human hue, performing and appreciating heartfelt music al fresco.

There were quite a few tears of joy after this piece and more...

O mio babbino caro

O mio babbino care,
Mi piace, e bello bello,
Vo andare in Porta Rossa
A comperar l anello!
Si,si ci voglio andare
e se l amassi indarno
andrei sui Ponte Vecchio
ma per buttaarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento!
O Dio, vorrei morir!
Babbo, pieta, pieta!
Babbo, pieta, pieta!

Translation

Oh my dear daddy
I love him, he is so handsome
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the ring!
Yes, yes, I mean it
And if my love were in vain
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno!
I fret and suffer torments!
Oh God, I would rather die!
Daddy, have pity, have pity!
Daddy, have pity, have pity!

Your eyes see the world

The PD ran the story yesterday--what happens to the video archive and the transcript?  I wondered the same thing about Mike O'Meara's touching story on the closing of the bookstore at West 25th.  We can't save everything, but bestsellers and commodities don't provide perspective or a sense of history.  Beautiful camera work to both Gus Chan and the anonymous cameraman with Mike O'Meara.  Your eyes see the world.

Jo Steigerwald has this lament and insight in this week's Free TImes.

She gets the feel of the place, and makes a connection to the current trend and buzzword, "experiential marketing," which can only hope to imitate what the Bookstore on 25th has in reality.

No more books for me

The Bookstore on 25th is the only place I've bought books in many years... very sad to see this pass.

A little irony that these Miyka'els all recognize something the rest of us refuse to see.

Wonderful article by Jo Steigerwald.  Here's an excerpt, but please read the whole article, which Michael Gill links to above.

We are all so busy. Going where? To our class on Stress Reduction in Under 59 Seconds? Too bad we won't be able to just drop into a noble used bookstore for a while and noodle around aimlessly. It's a damn shame.
