04/21/2006 - 17:00 04/21/2006 - 21:00 Etc/GMT-4 I received a postcard for the gallery opening of this exhibit. I've summarized the basics below. Please visit the website for more details. SPACES mounts the first exhibition in Ohio to explore the idea of Afrofuturism, the subculture that deals with the interplay between time, technology, race and culture in the USA. Seventeen artists, from both historical and future viewpoints, tackle the impact of technology on the physical, social and spiritual lives of black people. From science fiction to film and cultural exploration, the artists create work in painting, video and video games, sound installation, spoken word, sculpture, cinema and drawings. Conceived by The Soap Factory and Obsidian Arts in Minneapolis, the exhibition Afrofuturism was originally curated by Minneapolis-based artist Ernest Bryant and Suzanne Roberts of Obsidian Arts. SPACES introduced six northeast-Ohio artists into the exhibition. Artists in the exhibition include:Location

What do I like so much about chocolate? Well, for one, it is delicious, but its also good for you, and it can be so beautiful. Making fine chocolate is really an art form -- and we have many talented chocolatiers in NEO! ( categories: )

"No Umbrella" Screening at City HallSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 23:30.
The Cleveland Film Festival screening of Laura Paglin's documentary "No Umbrella -- Election Day" quickly sold out, but those who were n't able to get tickets got another chance in the rotunda of City Hall on Monday night. Free and open to the public, the film played at 6 p.m., before a city council meeting. About 100 people were there. Paglin is a local director who has been getting a lot of attention lately. The subject of her short documentary, which recently played at Sundance, is an election day fiasco in ward 7, that took place last November. The "star" of the film is councilwoman Fannie Lewis, who fought heroically for her constituents right to vote that day, when the board of elections failed to provide enough workers and ballots at one poling station. The grand theater of the Cleveland City Hall rotunda was the perfect setting to see NEO filmmaker Laura Paglin's acclaimed documentary "No Umbrella – An Election Day In The City". The "star" of the documentary, long-standing and much-beloved councilwoman Fannie Lewis, was the star of the screening as well, as she and filmmaker Paglin answered questions following the show.
