What movie changed your life?

My colleague at work suggested that we show movies that matter to the kids this fall.  So, a discussion ensued.  What visuals really made a dent in your life?  We could go on and on about songs that affected us, but films come back to haunt our dreams.

My two choices: Bread and Chocolate and The Point.  Not a surprise, both came out and were viewed by me while in my early teens.  Hen's Tooth Video, the makers of The Point, also put out the seminal Free to Be, you and me.  What movies will change our kids?

Aguirre the Wrath of God

My favorite all time movie is Aguirre the Wrath of God. The Official Story had a huge impact, as well. And Eraserhead.

Dark side

I have never seen Aquirre the Wrath of God, but now it is on my list.  Some of the darker films that forever changed me include: The Other, and other titles by Tom Tryon, and Boys from Brazil, and other titles by Ira Levin, and Tin Drum, from the book by Gunther Grass.

Tin Drum

Huge movie - big impact. And 2001, Clockwork Orange, Stranger Than Paradise, Dr. Strangelove, and of course Citizen Cane... we never learn.

Death ain't pretty

A patron commented that American films glorify death by violence, while foreign films confront the reality of our life cycle more realistically.  She recommended the Orphanage/El Orfanato.   The patron's comment reminded me of my mom telling me of going to the market to pick out the chicken to eat for dinner, and then having to see it slaughtered and having to clean the feathers herself.  Not such a bad lesson.  She still makes chicken paprikash.
