CONTROL THE ENEMY

"Speak softly and carry a big stick" is a military philosophy.

I suggest another: "speak and use appreciation to direct your adversary".

People go where they are appreciated.  When you compliment someone's behavior (pick the behavior you like), you inevitably re-inforce and drive the appreciated behavior.

And a military becomes a waste...

What would the world be like if the USA used it's 500 Billion dollar annual military budget to blog about behavior around the globe that we "appreciated"?

Every parent knows this works....

From Arsenals to Forest

Jeff--your photos are stunning.  From Jen Brumfield's birding diary 5/25/2008:
Greetings birders -

A Portage County Parks sponsored public tour of the
normally-closed-to-the-public Ravenna Training and Logistics Site (Ravenna Arsenal) on
Saturday, May 25th turned up 83 species. Participants numbered the same.
The trip was guided by Rosche, Semroc, Brumfields, Lute, Raber, and a
Major of the National Guard. We had spectacular weather, and great birds
all around. We birded the property from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This 21,000 acre property consists of grasslands, wetlands, ponds,
hemlock forest, plenty of 2nd growth woods, and mature beech/maple/oak
woods, with numerous creeks and streams running through. The are currently
240 species documented at RTLS, with numerous Ohio-uncommon breeding
birds in residence: including Chesnut-sided Warbler, Yellow-breasted
Chat, and Golden-crowned Kinglet among many others.

Because of the density of forest and habitat all-around, birds are
THICK. It is stunning, actually. Although we stopped at numerous points, we
covered quite a bit of territory in cars with windows down. This
allowed us to do a 15 mile-an-hour point count, persay. Numbers of singing
American Redstart (35+), Veery (8+), and Blue-winged Warbler (15+) were
very impressive. Followed by solid numbers of singing Hooded Warbler,
Common Yellowthroat, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

HIGHLIGHTS

Osprey (flyover) - 1

Olive-sided Flycatcher - 2

Purple Martin - 1 (second ever documented martin at RTLS)

Golden-crowned Kinglet

Black-billed Cuckoo - 1

Grasshopper Sparrow - 2

Canada Warbler - 2

OTHER:
Blue-winged, Tennessee, Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Black-and-white,
Hooded, Yellow, and Black-throated Green Warblers, and Ovenbird. Scarlet
Tanagers, Willow Flycatchers, Eastern Kingbirds (10+), American Kestrel.
