The first Mother's Day proclamation in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe was a passionate demand for disarmament and peace. On Sunday, May 9, Cleveland-area families will again celebrate Mother's Day as a day to promote world peace and civil rights.

Third Annual Mother's Day Peace Party, free and open to the public, features entertainments, refreshments, free family photos at the Gandhi statue (in India Garden) and art tables for kids to make their own Mother's Day cards. Students from Hindu Heritage School and the Smith-Sicking Songsters will also perform.

Cleveland actress Sherrie Tolliver, in authentic period costume, will portray Septima Clark, born in 1898 the daughter of a former slave. Septima was a civil rights activists years before the 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott focused world attention on America's deep racial segregation. Septima Clark mentored Rosa Parks who sparked the boycott by not giving her bus seat to a white person.

Mother's Day Peace Party is sponsored by Cleveland Peace Action, Federation of India Community Associations, Veterans For Peace-NE Ohio Chapter 39, Women Speak Out For Peace And Justice, and National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund-NE Ohio Chapter. For more information, call 216-383-1684.
