New Crime Data Tool Will Help PromoteSafer Neighborhoods in MilwaukeeMilwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has announced a unique initiative to provide incident-level crime data to the public via a mapping application on the City web site. “Everyday, neighborhoods here and across our country confront crime and the threat of crime and we benefit a great deal from organized groups of neighborhood residents who watch out for crime and suspicious activity, said Barrett. “This new tool provides additional ears and eyes to watch out for crime and it will help promote neighborhood security. Police Chief Nannette Hegerty added that, “This initiative marks a significant collaboration between city government and the community, in order to provide more timely and accurate information. Crime in Milwaukee has been declining, and this initiative will help achieve further reductions. Detailed incident-level information is a significant improvement to the available crime data, which was previously limited to summary data by block, and was not current. Furthermore, victim confidentiality will not be compromised, with the data showing only the date, time and location by type of crime. The types of crimes against persons and property include: Homicide, Sex Offenses, Aggravated Assaults, Burglary, Vehicle Theft, Theft, Arson, Shootings, Shots Fired, Robbery, Criminal Damage to Property and Lock Vehicle Entry. The COMPASS Community Mapping application containing the incident-level crime data can be found on the City of Milwaukee web site at www.milwaukee.gov/compass . The COMPASS (Community Mapping, Planning and Analysis for Safety Strategies) project was designed to improve the flow of information between government agencies and the community. Milwaukee was one of 3 cities to receive a grant from the National Institute of Justice in 2000 to start the project. Since that time COMPASS has continued with funding from Department of Justice – Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and Community Development Block Grant funding. The project provides data and maps through the City web site, as well as mapping services for City agencies, community groups and non-profit agencies.
