Reality Check - for those who believe Clevelanders have the same or better quality of life than 6 years ago... the Plain Dealer today reports "Cleveland man tracks down stolen car, leads police to suspected chop shop" about an auto theft victim on the West Side who was able to track down his stolen vehicle (in parts) and in the process locate an auto theft ring, chop shop and illegal drug operation "just seconds from the 2nd District police station". The article reports... "Bravo might still be waiting for police to find his 1993 Honda if he had not done his own sleuthing", going on to note:

Thieves stole more than 4,000 cars last year in Cleveland -- and heisted 1,382 through May 15 of this year -- but only one officer is assigned to the Auto Theft Unit. Six years ago, the unit had 12 members.

In other words, Cleveland citizens and visitors now get 8% of the auto theft crime prevention and enforcement police personnel resources that they received prior to Jackson beginning his first term as mayor.

Have you ever seen any metrics of the performance of our police department or any department of the city or other regional government that indicate success by our leaders in government?

Have you ever seen any metrics of their performance at all?

Here's one - under the current Jackson Administration costs to citizens for government have increased yet police headcounts dedicated to our significant auto crime crisis has been reduced over 90%, and citizens are forced to solve their own auto theft crimes or write off their losses, certainly making Cleveland a high auto insurance cost market - the additional cost to citizens for high costs of living are easy to measure, e.g. comparing rates for auto insurance for homeowners in Cleveland vs. other area cities and suburbs with more sufficient police resources.

More important, if there are almost no police resources dedicated to auto theft, how many more thieves steal how many more vehicles, and how many thefts go unreported because it is too difficult for victims to interact with police, meaning how informative are the metrics we are provided at all?

And this relates to the Tremont shooting of Jeff Chiplis--I have been asked to publish here-with apologies for any misinformation or misassumptions I have personally made here:

Jeff was walking to Pat's, not leaving. Pat's HAS been an ArtWalk venue...


This tragedy really had nothing to do with Pat's, ArtWalk or even the fact that yes he was shot right outside of the most expensive homes in Tremont.


It's about the fact, like it or not, alone after dark in a somewhat desolate area - any of us can be a victim.


I do get the gut feeling (and a good one) that this will pull some us together that have been at odds more recently.

There were several stories circulating around.  I also heard he was on his way to Pat's.  While Pat's is not considered glamerous enough to be included in the "artwalk scene, perhaps it should be.   It's a full three minute walk right down over the hill.  With the condos and new construction going on, I could have easily made the decision to walk down there. 

I've been trying for about two years now to get the overgrown bush forest down over the hill cleaned up. 

It would not only look better but would make the area look maintained and used.  I've suggested in making it a bird or butterfly sanctuary.  What really gets me is that all of the $300,000 plus condos look right down over this overgrown brush hill and yet, the condo owners won't help do anything about getting it cleaned up.  Maybe they consider the dumped trash and piles of old tires new age art?

It's easy to be provided mis information on something like the - so regardless of whether he was going or coming, it's horrible and it does have people on edge.

I guess the article wants us to use car theft as a benchmark for 'is life better in Cleveland'. The answer would have to be yes then. I don't agree with that, it isn't better but that is where this article leads us if we follow it's suggestion for a benchmark and the facts of car theft numbers in Cleveland.

This is what happens when you base your thoughts on defective PD reporting/writing. Their article is misleading as it never quotes or supplies any history on the numbers of car theft in Cleveland.

Car theft is down by a little more than 2500 cars a year in Cleveland. So if that is the benchmark you want us to use then I guess quality of life is better in Cleveland.

Someone just emptied a clip a few blocks from my house - two shots followed by six more in rapid succession - automatic handgun... sounded near Euclid and Superior. 11:12 PM - no sirens.

Wonder what they were shooting at. Wonder if there will be a police report?!
