america's elder brother, the hopi, need our helpSubmitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Sun, 02/07/2010 - 04:38.
Holly and I have driven the long road to visit the Hopi Nation several times since 1996. They live over 100 miles from Flagstaff and over 60 miles from Tuba City in the middle of desert-like conditions. Recently, we discovered budget cuts in Washington have severely impacted various housing and elderly assistance budgets for the Shongopovi Village on the Second Mesa in Arizona. Also, the recent winter storms have brought additional hardships as we discovered talking with Lee Wayne Lomayestewa, Kikmongwi (Chief) of the Shongopovi Village about how we could help. He thanked us and all those who donate time, labor resources and money to help his people... our American Elder Brothers. He hopes we will all continue assisting them in these darkening times. He pointed out to us that the current weather has created an urgent need for coal and firewood to heat the children and the elderly. Normally when Holly and I go up to the Second Mesa we load our SUV with bottled water, fresh fruits, blue corn meal, bottles of chili seasoning (for Hopi tacos), some vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beans etc) and even bags of tobacco for their ceremonial smokes... It gets very cold on top of the mesas in the high desert there during the winter. We have visited them where they huddled round coal fires under blankets inside their cinder block homes. Smoke fills the air inside and many of the older suffer with winter ailments... There are no paved streets between their homes and when the winter snows melt their homes are separated by deep, cold, muddy ruts... Most do not have indoor plumbing. We saw many family outhouses perched along the edges of the mesas... The Shongopovi live high on the second mesa and have to catch snow or rain water into cisterns or bring water in tankers to get enough drinking water. Many use outdoor latrines perched on the edge of the mesas overhanging the desert floor beneath to preserve water. They do plant blue corn below on the desert floor. They sacrifice water to allow visitors to their cultural center or who stay in the motel rooms nearby to have showers or baths and flush toilets. As the visitor center earns them an income they make that trade-off. Most of their homes are heated with firewood or coal from the nearby Peabody Coal Mine at Black Mesa. The Shongopovi are leading prophecy keepers for THE PEOPLE of Turtle Island (USA) and knowing what is coming,... have shared much with us and others who have helped them. We hope you will be among others who join us to help them. You can talk with LeeWayne by phone or email about the various programs that need help the most. If you wish to assist them financially or otherwise, contact: Lee Wayne Lomayestewa, Kikmongwi Email: LLomayestewa [at] hopi [dot] nsn [dot] us When we visit we stay at the Hopi Cultural Center Also visit these websites to learn more about the Hopi: If you wish Holly and I to send them your donation, push the "add to cart" button on our shopping cart and BE SURE to type in the amount you wish to send them and we will do so for you.
