Blessed be the poor of spirit...Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 15:10.
What's your opinion of this biblical citation? Just curious what other's think it means... I heard a great sermon about this on the trip North over the weekend. Amazing how many countless perspectives this one little passage encompasses.

Blessed be the poor of spirit....
Is this like the RUSSO & DIMORA ATTITUDES? (You know, like when Dimora put up that middle finger at all of the people of Cuyahoga County who were abused over the last couple decades by corruption?

Being poor in spirit is
Being poor in spirit is opposed to arrogance of spirit. How could Christ reach the rich and powerful? What need of Him have they? It is a way of saying that humility is a virtue. Pride sets up our falls. The humble and the weary are more likely to have an open heart to Christ's message of hope and redemption. But note, he does not equate humility of spirit with poverty. Christ did warn that the rich man might have a hard time getting into heaven. But that is because arrogance deafens us to so much. Certainly, Christ's message gets crowded out in our modern, materialistic world. And, of course, He knew that the poor in spirit needed to know they were valued in God's eyes.
That sounds just like the sermon I listened to...
....and it makes one think about things....
I am amazed by the "(financially) poor" who will give the shirts off their backs for their fellow man, make a seat at the dinner table for the hungry, and treat the down and out with more respect than can often be imagined by some people.
Moreover, I am even more amazed by the "financially well off" who treat others with contempt, disdain, and irreverance while smugly sipping their wine and laughing at the people of lesser levels than they feel they are at in this world.
....prayers for all....
