The June 2nd WVIZ Ideas TV program explored what makes a city “cool�, by considering the former “Rubber City� of Akron's efforts to understand Generation X (folks born 1961-1981), which is the “Gold Standard� in the knowledge based economy. Akron is the first city in this region to analyze this critical economic development sector, with their Chamber of Commerce hiring the world-experts on the subject, Next Generation Consulting, of Madison, WI. Led by their Gen X CEO, Rebecca Ryan, Akron is comparing its Generation X appeal versus that of many of America’s most vibrant cities, like San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Minneapolis.

The 06.03.05 City Club debate on Social Security reform started on the sidewalks outside the City Club, where many activists opposed to privatization handed out literature and asked passer-by-ers to sign petitions expressing opposition, to be sent to our legislators. Inside the City Club, the audience appears of like sentiment, populating tables sponsored by the AFL-CIO, AARP, and Friends of Sherrod Brown.

The City of Akron has taken the lead in Northeast Ohio to understand Generation Xers in their community, how to appeal to them, and how to transform their economy as a community inclusive of young and old for leadership in the New Economy. Related insight is posted here.

Ohio could become the first state to enact a constitutional requirement for education funding levels, Bryan Flannery, told a Cleveland City Club Forum Friday.

Flannery, a former municipal and state officeholder, is the self-described chief advocate of a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution. He leads a state-wide effort to get the 320,000 signatures needed to put the proposed amendment on November's ballot.

A lot of conversation has come from a few of us that attended the REI Regional Meeting: University Collaborative on sustainability. What were your opinions and what do you feel next steps should be?

On December 11, 2002, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled for the fourth time that Ohio’s school funding system is unconstitutional and the General Assembly had failed to meet the mandates of the court to perform “a complete systematic overhaul of the school-funding system.�

On March 31, 2005, the Greater Cleveland Lead Advisory Council (GCLAC) announced a significant initiative to eradicate lead poisoning in Greater Cleveland by 2010. On April 26th the GCLAC formally launched the initiative with a meeting of the membership held at Burke Lakefront Airport.
