May the sad passing of remarkable Cleveland son Philip Johnson be the NEO Turning Point!

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 01/26/2005 - 21:40.

"Monuments differ in different periods. Each age has its own."

"Maybe, just maybe, we shall at last come to care for the most important, most challenging, surely the most satisfying of all architectural creations: building cities for people to live in."

US isolationism offers NEO regional opportunity, if we think global

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 01/16/2005 - 14:52.

There is a fascinating article in the 01/16/05 NY Times on the challenges outstanding international students have finding jobs in the US. Considering the US is an immigrant-based economy and, except for Native Americans, we're all relatively recent transplants, the current "lock the gates" federal policy is probably the most harmful to the US economy of any of the current administration - we are not importing knowledge workers, at a time when the world is eclipsing us in brainpower. As you read on you'll see, there's Ivy League brainpower all over the world and some of it wants to work in America - foolish US policy is keeping it out, driving US companies to send work abroad, as other economies gain competitive advantages over the US. Perhaps smart leaders in NEO can excel as world-experts in bringing global brainpower here, as a unique value of NEO. Tell me, why not! Read on...

DEAR PETER: Plain Dealer Steven Litt builds Case for NEO Collegetown

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 01/09/2005 - 17:16.

Cleveland Plain Dealer architecture critic Steven Litt writes of a "Golden Opportunity" for University Circle's future in proposing Case University, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and other local arts and learning institutions make optimal use of their master planning to leverage innovative networking and world-class brainpower to build a higher quality, well-connected powerhouse for this region - a "collegetown" gateway integrating University Circle institutions and stakeholders with surrounding community and regional interests. Steven prods UC-related leadership to follow models of excellence found at well planned universities in Cincinnati, Tempe, and Chicago and recounts "Philanthropist Peter Lewis, chairman of Mayfield-based Progressive Corp., has encouraged such collaborative thinking by hinting that he might open his purse for the right mix of projects. But in a speech at the UCI annual meeting in November, he said he was unimpressed with a confidential plan forwarded to him by Case. Nevertheless, Lewis said he's keeping an open mind." UC leaders must become more open and open-minded in their master planning, as that was clearly a critical success factor common for the three "best-collegetowns" highlighted above, and for securing the support of global leaders like Lewis. Read on for Litt's open vision for UC "to create a sense of urbanism and to heal the rift between town and gown":

DEAR PETER: move CIA into the downtown area or simply push Case / CSU students more into downtown living

Cool local artist and creative entrepreneur Bridget Ginley - founder W. 25th Street Buzz Gallery - has posted to her lake of consciousness blog, erie.effusion, some great concepts for better integrating and socializing regional brainpower to make NEO a more sustainable, quality place.

Creativity, the arts and the Internet

Success in TIME - now to connect the dots for Freezing Pointe

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 12/20/2004 - 10:56.

CrainTech published a story about two graduates of CIA's TIME
- The Integrated Media Environment - program
, which fits perfectly with a recent development announced at American Greetings: AG invested in a
children-oriented film and television production, marketing and brand
development company named The Hatchery, in LA, and the CIA TIME grads have
formed an animation production company called Flipline
Interactive Design Studios
that has an animation product they want to take to market (and lots more in the works, as you'll see at their website).
What better dots could we have waiting to connect for a local success story?

Form's Steve Cencula says Innovation follows more than just function

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 12/03/2004 - 22:00.

The Form Group founder Steve Cencula was on recent panels at the Making Change and BizArt forums, where he brought to the attention of attendees the need to merge creative and entrepreneurial instincts, which has made him successful in design and business - his newest enterprise is developing interactive media and games for product development, communication and education. A point that stood out in his BizArt discussion was that he started his previous company, Kaleidoscope, because he wanted to do things he couldn't do or even learn to do at school - he knew by doing his own thing he would provide a product and service unique in NEO. He saw opportunity and he conquered. !00s more Steve Cencula's and NEO will be 100x more innovative - he's now on the Board of the Cleveland Institute of Art and promises they will be driving that level of change in NEO in the future. Posted below is the conclusion of an article Steve wrote on innovation...

NOTES FROM: CIA/REI BizArt explores synergies between arts and business

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 11/29/2004 - 11:38.

BizArt is a Weatherhead School of
Management based community
dedicated to developing the synergies that exist
between the worlds of business and art. Along with many area development
leaders and professionals, this initiative is exploring the value of the creative
class in this community, and breaking down walls found in traditional economies
and organizations – everyone is creative – everyone has entrepreneurial
instincts – everyone should learn to leverage both sides of the equation. It is
exciting to see this free forum provided to students from both Case and the
Cleveland Institute of Art, allowing for sharing of knowledge and perspectives
among NEO’s emerging economic drivers.

NOTES FROM: CIA 1st Annual Design Conference

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 11/29/2004 - 09:26.

I'll start my insight from the 1st CIA Design Conference with a few quotes from the incredible designer James Victore. To artists in the audience, he encourages them to realize the power of their talent, saying "Our opinion has value." "Learn a skill - get a job... learn to think and have a career." He regrets that these days "no one wants to suffer or give up anything" and he demonstrates how, by being different, by being authentic to himself, he has become one of the most important visual and social voices of our time.

At CIA, Mel Chin offers "Spectrum of Survival" as defense against the WMD poverty

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 11/13/2004 - 14:05.

Mel Chin's presence at the CIA
"Aesthetics and Consumer Culture" symposium showed art and artist at
their very best, inspiring attendees to make Cleveland a more
valuable community...help save the world. Some concepts he presented from his work that we should embrace in our community include:

  1. Use art to give all Clevelanders a voice throughout the community
    and beyond
  2. Create collaborations of art, science and technology for
    environmental good
  3. Realize our poverty is a Weapon of Mass Destruction and use art to
    go to war against that
  4. Add more cultures to our "Cultural Gardens" and interconnect them all with all our people

Transcending the artfulness of the event was the reality of art as social activism, which
inspires a more intelligent vision of the human role in Earth's future, being for global benefit. Chin’s impact
is that important - as is the realization everyone here may be as impactful. Read on and learn from the best of art...

Cleveland Institute of Art - One of NEO's Greatest Forces in Economic Development

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 11/13/2004 - 13:30.

Art and creative industies represent $ billions in economic activity in Northeast Ohio, and the CIA is the greatest fuel we have for that wealth engine. Not only does the CIA provide the region with great creators - fine, design, graphic and craft artists and entrepreneurs - but CIA brings to town monumental art and events that generate cash for our economy. Most important, CIA is developing programs that raise awareness of social issues essential to improving the quality of life and prosperity of all our residents. Read and contribute insight gained from experiencing CIA enlightenment here.

11.09.04 NOTES: Tuesday@REI Forging our future with the metal of creative industries

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 11/10/2004 - 23:39.

For the past several years, one of the hottest topics in NEO economic development circles has been the value and future potential of our "creative class" - Cleveland State recently estimated Playhouse Square's contribution to the economy at $43 million per year, and CPAC finds just arts and culture creates $1.3 billion a year in econopmic activity in Cuyahoga County alone - but creative class guru Richard Florida only ranks our creative class at 30th out of the 49 largest regions in America, and all local economic development thinkers think we have lots more value to capture. REI Director Ed Morrison projects that "Creative" industries are in fact our next "Steel", and he and other creative leaders here are doing lots about forging more value in this sector of the new economy, including hosting a session at REI November 9 about harnessing more of its horsepower. Here are my notes from the session:

As part of this exciting event, the CIA brought renowned writer and social theorist George Ritzer to speak about "Art,
McDonaldization and the Globalization of
Society". I had the pleasure to attend, and share the following observations about how his presentation fits our interest of nurturing regional economic development.
