Conductor Gregory Vajda joins CityMusic Cleveland's principal flutist Heidi Ruby Kushious for the final concert series of the season. First on the program is Sibelius' Rakastava, followed by Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 in G Major. The program concludes with Beethoven's magnificient 8th Symphony.

 

Hailed as a “young titan” by the Montreal Gazette after conducting the Montreal Symphony in Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Schoenberg’s Erwartung, Gregory Vajda has fast become one of the most sought-after conductors on the international scene. After completing his tenure as assistant conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2005, Mr. Vajda took over as resident conductor of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2005-06 season. Additionally, in 2009 he was appointed Artistic and Music Director of Music in the Mountains, CA - the only second conductor to hold that position in the festival’s 28-year history.

 

A native of Southern California, Heidi Ruby Kushious received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Julius Baker, John Krell, and Murray Panitz. She then studied with Thomas Nyfenger at the Yale Graduate School of Music and Alain Marion at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and made her solo recital debut in Carnegie Hall. As a concerto soloist she has appeared with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Curtis Symphony, Yale Philharmonia and Red {an orchestra}, and in a duo concerto with Jean-Pierre Rampal and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Her competition successes include Laureate prizewinner of the Munich International Flute Competition, where she was the first American flute finalist in 21 years. Heidi Ruby Kushious is in her sixth season as Principal Flute with CityMusic Cleveland.

 

In CityMusic Cleveland's Education Program, artist-teachers from the orchestra work with elementary school children, teaching them how to listen to music, read musical notation, and play an instrument. A 28-week curriculum is in place in Elyria (with Save Our Children), and 28-weeks in Slavic Village. The program is free. It is based on the phenomenally successful El Sistema of Venezuela.
