In the recent east coast snow storm dozens of people died from snow related heart attacks and accidents.   However, there were also about a dozen deaths from carbon monoxide asphyxiation - and many of those took place inside cars..left running with snow blocking exhaust pipe...to keep occupants warm.    This link has state by state death/with cause totals.

In Ohio a week ago a 29 year old and and a 21 year old died in a jeep - off roading they got stuck with the rear of the jeep underwater in a stream - called for a tow truck, and while waiting for the tow truck both persons asphyxiated.   

When you think about it having a internal combustion engine running is always an asphyxiation hazard and therefore there should always be an associated carbon monoxide alarm/shut off - but I have never seen any engine with such an alarm/shut off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an agency in the executive branch of our government:   Mr. Obama you may be able to take actions which will help implement the installation of carbon monoxide alarms/engine shut offs in vehicles.
