Building inner city wealth

Submitted by Ed Morrison on Sun, 09/25/2005 - 16:51.

One of the biggest challenges facing Cleveland comes in building the networks needed to build wealth in our inner city neighborhoods.

The inner city is an important economic development frontier, and new models of development show promise. Some years ago, Michael Porter established the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City to apply cluster approaches to these markets. Learn more

Why the Levy Failed

Submitted by DerekArnold on Tue, 08/16/2005 - 10:50.
One Opinion on Why the Levy Failed

As I commuted here via public transportation, I got into a conversation with an associate about the levy that failed two weeks ago. He stated that it was just because of the corruption, graft and inequality in which the schools have been complicit and that denial of funding to the school district is necessary and just. While his evidence to support his claims is documented in the district's history (because these things HAVE happened in the Cleveland Municipal School District), I could not offer evidence that things would change.

Children and parents alike were, and still are, captivated by Where the Wild Things Are that tells the story of a boy named Max who “made mischief of one kind or another and is sent to his room without his supper. As readers will recall Max then sails on a private boat “through night and day and becomes “king of the wild things. Published in 1963, the book was awarded a Caldecott Medal in 1964. An exhibition for people of all ages, Where the Wild Things Are provides the opportunity for hands-on interaction with Sendak’s stories and characters. Visitors are encouraged to dress up like a “wild thing and dance in the wild forest, cook in the “night Kitchen, read on Rosie’s stoop, slide into a bowl of chicken soup and create their own masterpieces while listening to classical music.

Three newly-conserved Japanese hanging scrolls are a highlight in this installation of Chinese and Japanese art dating from 2000 BCE to the present. The earliest scroll, Gibbon on a Rock by Kanõ Yasunobu (16131685), is one of only five Kanõ-school ink paintings in the Allen's collection. It illustrates the important connections between Kanõ painters and Zen Buddhism.

One of America's most endearing comedies, this family-friendly, Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a hilariously unconventional family and their unusually eclectic friends will leave you breathless with laughter. The crazy, lovable Sycamore family plays impromptu hosts when their soon to be in-laws arrive unexpectedly for dinner. Sparks fly (literally!) as the non-conformist Sycamores face-off with the ultra-traditional Kirbys. Classic comedy takes center stage in Kaufman and Hart’s American masterpiece.
