VOTE NO ON SIN TAX CAMPAIGN DEMONSTRATES ON A WET AND WINDY DAY DEMONSTRATING ALONG TRISKETT ROAD, NEAR WARREN ROAD, ON A WET 04-04-14, LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
On Friday, April 4, 2014 – there was a 3.5-hour demonstration in our West Park neighborhood to inform voters to VOTE NO ON SIN TAX in the coming election on May 6. The Sin Tax is listed as issue 7 on the ballot. It rained during most of the demonstration. It was also very windy – and the gusts knocked down my shopping cart a number of times. I demonstrate, carrying one sign in my hand and using the other hand to pull my shopping cart. I usually walk on the sidewalks or along the grassy patches adjoining the curbs. The cart holds one more sign I can use to demonstrate when I am standing at a location and I want the signs to face the traffic –one in each direction. I also have one sign attached to the front of the cart. The cart also holds three or four signs with stakes that I distribute to anyone who requests a sign for display in their front lawn or in a business window. The first hour of the demonstration took me from our house on Cooley Avenue to Riverside School where I am a volunteer teacher. I am a retired Structural Engineer and this is my 9th year teaching. The demonstration took me along Cooley Avenue, West 134th Street, Lorain Avenue, Triskett Road, West 146th Street and Montrose Avenue. After I had completed the teaching assignment – I demonstrated for an additional 2.5 hours on the way back home when I went down Montrose, West 146th Street, west on Triskett Road, south on Warren Road, and east along Lorain Avenue. I stop along the way and take photographs at appropriate locations and post them in the VOTE NO ON SIN TAX ON MAY 6, 2014 Facebook group and other related groups. I also stop at stores on the way and complete my shopping chores. I have a two-flyer, that explains why there is a campaign to oppose the Sin Tax, which I distribute to pedestrians and others who request it. The demonstrations started on March 3, 2014 – the day I received the shipment of 100 yard signs. So far there have been 17 demonstrations for a total of over 40 hours – on the west side, downtown Cleveland, and along East 55th Street. This is equivalent to walking 120 miles. I have paid for the yard signs and they are distributed free of charge – as a service to the community. The signs have been posted all over Cleveland and parts of Cuyahoga county. I enjoy demonstrating – it is an excellent way for conveying your message. The signs are seen by thousands – and then there is the multiplying effect – where the observers go home and talk to their family and friends. And it is also very good exercise – I come home and sleep like a baby. NO TO CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OHIO’S EXTENSION OF THE ‘SIN TAX’ FOR ANOTHER 20-YEARS The first ‘sin tax’ (approved in May 1990) provided partial financing for the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex which includes Progressive Field (Indians) and Quicken Loans Arena (Cavaliers) in Cleveland. The second ‘sin tax’ (an extension of the first was approved in November 1995) provided funds for the construction of the Browns Stadium now known as First Energy Stadium. From August 1990 through October 2013, the ‘sin tax’ generated over $350 million for use in construction and maintenance of the three sports facilities. The current ‘sin tax’ is due to expire in July 2015. The extension is expected to generate $260 million in 20 years.
