Tour of Nottingham-Spirk Innovation Center Highlight of Recent Access to the Arts Event

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 04/25/2005 - 16:28.

The Access to the Arts “Arts on the Air program Tuesday, April 19th
featuring John Nottingham and John Spirk of Nottingham and Spirk Design
Association Inc.
was a sell out. The event offered not only the usual
interview, luncheon and musical entertainment, but also a tour of
Nottingham-Spirk’s new headquarters. Nottingham-Spirk is perhaps
Cleveland’s most often told success story – a story many audience
members probably already knew well. Many seemed most interested in
getting a look inside the former First Church of Christ Scientist,
which Nottingham-Spirk are renovating and transforming into their new
“Innovation Center.

Stanczak Op Art Exhibit a Rare Treat for Cleveland

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 04/25/2005 - 16:22.

"Chroma" an exhibit of paintings and prints by Julian Stanczak is arguably the most important show currently on view in Cleveland. Stanczak is an internationally known artist and important figure of the Op Art movement of the 1960s. He also is a longtime Cleveland-area resident and emeritus professor of the Cleveland Institute of Art - he was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize in 1969. Works from three decades of Stanczak's career can be seen by appointment at Elevation Art, 1240 Huron Road in the Playhouse Square District now through May 20th. The opening reception on Friday evening April 22nd drew a large crowd representing the "who's who" of the Northeast Ohio art scene, including many artists and art dealers.

The art history students of Case Western Reserve University organized another successful Cleveland Symposium Friday April 15th. The Cleveland Symposium is an annual graduate art history symposium, which takes place at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This year nine graduate students from universities throughout the country presented 20 minute papers. Their papers covered a wide range of historical periods and geographic areas: Italian Renaissance fresco, 17th century Peruvian manuscripts, 18th century French sculpture, 19th century photography, Hudson River School landscape painting, American modernism, abstract expressionism, and contemporary art.

Any FARKers out there?

Submitted by Amin Varghai on Sat, 04/09/2005 - 20:35.

I attended two of most entertaining sessions at NOTACON this afternoon.  I have to thank Froggy for making this happen.  At about 5pm I listened and laughed at Drew Curtis talk about his FARK.com.  Drew talked about the challenges, experiences and most of all the fun you can have running a community based amuzing site.   The amount of opportunity and fun you can with his site are immense.

A no incentive zone in NEO?

Submitted by Ed Morrison on Fri, 04/08/2005 - 07:26.

Here is an idea worth exploring. Phoenix has agreed to stop giving away lucrative sales-tax dollars by signing a deal that creates a "no-incentive zone" with neighboring cities of Tempe and Chandler.

introducing Jen Mack's blog, "Extremely Profound Conclusions on Music and Management"

Submitted by Sandy Kristin P... on Thu, 04/07/2005 - 00:12.

The third of my students this semester who has taken on a topically-focused blogging assignment is Jennifer Mack. She is a double major in music and management, and she still finds time to track down really interesting references to music in business contexts, and to the business of the music industry.

21st Century Journalism - REALNEWS

Submitted by peter holmes on Mon, 04/04/2005 - 08:22.

The DNA of a region - like that of an individual - provides clues and information about future outcomes.  Case in point, are comparisions between NEO and California's Bay area.  The latter is a growth region and the former is not.  Understanding their respective civic and business behavoir provides information - frequently in code - about how things get done.

The Nature - Nurture debate Harvard's Steven Pinker weighed in on as Case's first Distinguished Lecturer last month, has rich meaning for innovation and entrepreneurship:  Comparisions between NEO and California's Bay Area are illustrative.

introducing Lori Vanelli's blog on "The Young of the Working World"

Submitted by Sandy Kristin P... on Thu, 03/31/2005 - 06:20.

Last fall, Lori Vanelli was an enthusiastic early adopter of the livejournal assignment for MGMT 250. This spring for MGMT 251, she found coming up with a topical focus for her blog writing a bit of a challenge, and I'm pleased that her tone of slightly irreverent reflection on herself and others has been retained as she has come to focus on the young of the working world. Over the course of February and March she has written about twixters, boomerang kids, quarterlife crises, and how she and her peers perceive themselves and the challenges that face them. Lori's livejournal is a great introduction to the NEO blogging scene from the point of view of a 20something, and I'm sure she'll stick with it even after the semester ends.

introducing the Real Estate Management blog: Ryan Arlia

Submitted by Sandy Kristin P... on Tue, 03/29/2005 - 01:54.

Would you please take a look at Ryan Arlia's class project for MGMT 251? Ryan has chosen to focus on real estate management issues, and would like to get feedback on the posts he made in February and in March. His post about online marketing strategies is particularly interesting. Your comments on any of the posts would be most welcome... part of what Ryan needs to do for his project assignment is to so some experiments with how to build traffic to his blog, so if you have any suggestions for him, I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from you.
