Veterans for Peace local Chapter 39 will commemorate Veterans Day with a reading of letters and quotes from soldiers and their loved ones dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Mary Reynolds-Powell, Chapter 39 president, cited president Dwight D. Eisenhower's statement in April, 1953, as setting the program theme: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, and the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”

Two of VFP’s missions are to increase public awareness of the true costs of war, Powell said, and to abolish war as an instrument of national policy.

The original armistice ending World War I was signed at the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month of 1914, and later came to be known worldwide as Armistice Day. In 1954, President Eisenhower named November 11 as Veterans Day, now one of America's 11 national holidays.

This event is free and open to the public
