CLEVELAND, OH—Kevin Phillips, a former GOP strategist, will speak about his newest book American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century at noon on Friday, May 26, 2006, at The City Club of Cleveland.

At a recent City Club Forum, President Bush was asked a question about Phillips’ book. The question from City Club board member Jan Roller and the President’s response received national coverage from the media.

In American Theocracy, Phillips looks to the future of the Republican Party and the rogue political coalition that is driving America toward Armageddon and insolvency. He identifies three trends that threaten the future of the United States and the world: the dominant role that oil has in defining foreign and domestic policy; the prevalence of radical Christianity in politics and government; and the huge debts that Americans and the government are accumulating.

Phillips was a senior strategist for Richard Nixon’s 1968 campaign, which was the basis for a book The Emerging Republican Majority, which predicted a conservative realignment in national politics, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential recent works in political science.

Phillips has been a political and economic commentator for more than three decades and has been a contributor to NPR, the “Los Angeles Times,” “Harper’s Magazine” and “TIME.” He is the author of 12 other books, including the New York Times bestsellers The Politics of Rich and Poor and Wealth and Democracy.

Tickets for this City Club Friday Forum are $18 for members and $30 for non-members. Lunch is included. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance of the event. They can be purchased by calling The City Club at 216.621.0082 or visiting the website at www.cityclub.org.
