If Senate Bill 5 passes the Ohio Legislature, we will no longer have the right to Collective Bargaining.

Ladies and Gentleman,

The time has come for us to fight for our jobs or lose all we have accomplished over these many years of Collective Bargaining.

The new Governor wants to destroy the unions by removing the Collective Bargaining Law.

If Senate Bill 5 passes the Ohio Legislature, we will no longer have the right to Collective Bargaining.  If that happens, we will all be in great jeopardy.   This bill would take away the rights of tens of thousands of AFSCME members to negotiate for wages, health care, sick leave, dental, and other benefits.

That’s right – if this bill passes, the Mayor will be able to simply tell us what we are getting.  In fact, they could even cut wages to the current minimum wage law.

Collective Bargaining has worked well in the state of Ohio by eliminating conflict and giving public employees a voice at work.

If the threats, lies and attacks on your very livelihood have not grabbed your attention yet, this needs to be the moment where you pick up the phone and begin to fight back.

We must take action now. Please call your state senator today.  Ask them to reject this radical measure that does not have the support of Ohio citizens and will not help Ohioans get back on their feet. Tell them to keep their promise to create jobs, not take away employees' voice on the job.

Tell your state senator to vote NO on Senate Bill 5.

Daily traffic record - Realneo

 Hello Guy, FYI

Your post - the warning email from Tracey Conaty of AFSCME concerning collective bargaining in danger at the Ohio State House (which you posted February 8), on February 17, 2011 drew over 3,000 unique visitors and, in combination with Realneo's usual traffic, set a daily unique visitor record of 4,316.

About 1/2 of the 45,000 total visitors have come from Ohio, California next, and all 50 states have sent hundreds of visits.  What can you do Quest to add to this discussion?  It is an important topic.

The Wisconsin legislature's recent activity- which drove the Wis. Democratic senators to Chicago to be out of jurisdiction - has every union member across the US concerned - and non-union members should also be concerned about the Republican lynching mob mentality.

This is a tough issue.   Unions do not generally have effective, transparent, efficiency and accountability standards - and their employers are often arbitrary and insensitive.    Both sides need improvement.  Or maybe the "both sides" is the issue, and organizations more like Lincoln Electric should be advanced.

Guy is on a roll

I believe he has an update on Tremont parking issues last night.  According to a voice mail message - which Guy claims that I don't listen to - the police were very active in Tremont again last night. Lots of tickets issued.

Yes Lilly, as I posted last

Yes Lilly, as I posted last night, tickets were flying all over the place.  There were about 6 police cars and they were nailing people by 806 and College.  Vehicles were parked in Tow-Away zones, blocking fire hydrants, no parking spaces and blocking crosswalks.

I understand there were a lot of vehicles parked on the Treelawns on West 11th but I don't know if any of those were ticketed.

It is so good to see that our police dept is not knuckling down under the Cimperman's bark.

UNION HISTORY IN OHIO

Have you forgotten the past?  My first job was in the "smoke stack" factories along Lake Erie.  The union workers ruined the company and, eventually, sent it out of state.  My father and father in law were union.  I saw the good and the bad.  It is difficult to support the unions today with the horrible performance of unions, in northern Ohio, in the last 50 years.  Tell me you have gotten more reasonable.

I saw the union leaders working to corrupt Democracy here

I saw the union leaders in Northeast Ohio working to corrupt Democracy here. Went to a few of their Democratic "fund-raisers" and political action events - Unions leaders and a few corrupt politicians trying to take down the entire region out of very small, unimportant self interests - all about crony-ism and PREVENTING COLLECTIVE PROGRESS FOR AMERICA. I saw how the game works, and it is evil. The unions are nothing more than a PAC for their own leadership dysfunction and greed.... I don't think they represent the interests of union workers, America and the world in the slightest. When I see unions reorganize for America rather than corruption, I may see a reason to support that archaic power structure again... but thet will never change - gangsters.

Disrupt IT

Hey, I worked Northeastern

Hey, I worked Northeastern Ohio, from Mentor to Ashtabula;  and I saw what unions did.  Not good.  As a union worker, I became a slave to unorthadox union leaders.  Then I went non-union and did well for 40 years.  Hard working, honest people don't need to hide behind unions.  I think all workers need to be treated good; they have families; many are skilled;  but most are being taken advantage of by bad union leadership.

SB 5

Will make it illegal:

--For an employer to pay more than 80% of healthcare premiums for ANY employee.  No "free" single plan could be offered.  Meaning hundreds per month added to the cost of health care coverage for families.  (Those that can't pay will drop their coverage and the rest of us--who do end up paying the premiums--will pay more to cover everyone else).

--For a public employer to pay any portion of employee's retirement...as it stands now, many public employees pay 14% and their employer contributes 10%.

--To have a wage-step for ANY public employee.  ALL pay increases (if any) would be based on "merit."  Of course, there would be no way to ensure fairness, equity and lack of cronyism, favoritism etc.

Lincoln Electric

This is good to know, Jeff--and Lincoln Electric provides an admirable business model, but they also heavily rely on the defense contract industry.

So, as much as I like you, I am not in agreement with your assessment here:

This is a tough issue.   Unions do not generally have effective, transparent, efficiency and accountability standards - and their employers are often arbitrary and insensitive.    Both sides need improvement.  Or maybe the "both sides" is the issue, and organizations more like Lincoln Electric should be advanced.

Do I wish that unions did a better job of NOT protecting employees who abuse sick time, overtime etc.???

Yes--but overall--unions are proactive in preventing rampant cronyism and favoritism.  If you work hard, you have a job.

Meanwhile, administrators in any organization that does not operate with a measurable bottom/production line (e.g. non-profit, government) often can, and DO, get away with outrageous conduct.

For the most part, the rank and file, can not get away with egregious behavior, because their time IS on the clock.

Solicitor Visit

A young man came to my door this evening, trying to get my support for senate bill 5.

It was raining, it was cold and it was dark. I wonder how much he is being paid?

I work in a non union shop. I get my pay raises on my personal merits.

I am also one of many "taxpayers" who pay the salaries of those "public employees" who are doing all the complaining.

Perhaps they are worried that their "merits" will not keep them on the payroll without the protections they now enjoy.

the anti-union

sentiment is getting to be really too much. Amazing how people forget the history of this country, and the back breaking work for low paying jobs in horrendous conditions that lead to unions. It was the unions that forged the wage agreements, health insurance, and forced laws to protect health and safety in the workplace. Those who work in a non union shop are protected by the health and safety regulations that unions brought to all workplaces.

Though a bit dated, this link gives another perspective on the issue: www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2008/09/04/myths-about-labor-unions-capitalist-salvos-in-the-class-war/

And, cledsome, I hope that the young man at your door was being well paid.
