Industrial Society Destroys Mind and EnvironmentSubmitted by sushil_yadav on Mon, 08/21/2006 - 00:17.
I want to share my article with you. This is about the link between Mind and Social / Environmental-Issues. The fast-paced, consumerist lifestyle of Industrial Society is causing exponential rise in psychological problems besides destroying the environment. All issues are interlinked. Our Minds cannot be peaceful when attention-spans are down to nanoseconds, microseconds and milliseconds. Our Minds cannot be peaceful if we destroy Nature. Subject : In a fast society slow emotions become extinct. Emotion is what we experience during gaps in our thinking. If there are no gaps there is no emotion. Today people are thinking all the time and are mistaking thought (words/ language) for emotion. When society switches-over from physical work (agriculture) to mental work (scientific/ industrial/ financial/ fast visuals/ fast words ) the speed of thinking keeps on accelerating and the gaps between thinking go on decreasing. There comes a time when there are almost no gaps. People become incapable of experiencing/ tolerating gaps. Emotion ends. Man becomes machine. A society that speeds up mentally experiences every mental slowing-down as Depression / Anxiety. A ( travelling )society that speeds up physically experiences every physical slowing-down as Depression / Anxiety. A society that entertains itself daily experiences every non-entertaining moment as Depression / Anxiety. FAST VISUALS /WORDS MAKE SLOW EMOTIONS EXTINCT. A FAST (LARGE) SOCIETY CANNOT FEEL PAIN / REMORSE / EMPATHY. A FAST (LARGE) SOCIETY WILL ALWAYS BE CRUEL TO ANIMALS/ TREES/ AIR/ WATER/ LAND AND TO ITSELF. I know the feeling... very important lesson
This offers an important perspective I haven't seen well articulated before. Add to that the harsh realities of the intellectual bankruptcy and complete failure of American society today and the conflict arising from America's attempted design of globalization in our image, compounded by constant communications and life here seems a closed, tight box. With the American world and family gone nuclear, and spirituality branded and perverted, there seem no escapes. Mediate with drugs (pharm and other) and society gets sicker in the short and long run. There are few places and unique circumstances in America I have ever felt at peace... highly globalized yet spiritually free San Francisco is number one, but only when surrounded by people from other countries bringing their cultures to the US...
The only hope for American society and the world as we impact it is in the next seven generations of the world rejecting all that has been constructed for the world by American (and other world-conquering) leadership of my lifetime... they have been wrong about life and have forced upon us a sick world - we need to become the leaders and with new leaders from around the world rebuild global culture to redefine work, play, love and success. I do believe there are enough really disgusted young people to lead such change, but it will be a major battle against the instinct from our parents to destroy all life on Earth in pursuit of rapturenomics.
I think America's youth can take over this country and make it better but I'm not sure what will happen at the global level. China is just shifting into the globally destructive mode America perfected. Can there be world peace celebrating the abundance on Earth of all life needs or will the people of the world destroy the planet in a self-inflicted panic of ill-societal scarcity-based pursuit of what we never needed in the first place?
