"Jitney" as fundraiser for green building in East Cleveland

East Cleveland Theater presents "Jitney" by August Wilson.
Sunday, February 15, 2009.

At a ramshackle taxi depot, the middle-aged men who drive unlicensed gypsy cabs, or "jitneys," strive to find honor and accomplishment amidst a landscape of diminishing opportunity. When the station owner's estranged son returns from 20 years in prison, their reunion unleashes two decades of brutal, raw emotion.

An American icon, August Wilson depicted the human condition like no other playwright of his time. His legacy lives on through his crowning achievement: a cycle of 10 plays chronicling the African American experience, each set in a different decade of the 20th century. Crafted over nearly 25 years, these works garnered Wilson myriad accolades, including a Tony Award and two Pulitzer Prizes. The Kennedy Center brought them together for staged readings of all 10 of Wilson's masterpieces, frequently dubbed, "The Pittsburgh Cycle," since all but one are set in the city of his youth.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to create a green, sustainable house in the City of East Cleveland.

I have enjoyed productions at the East Cleveland Theater.  My friend Kyle Primous has staged productions there.  February 15th is a Sunday, so I am good to go:)

Jitney is worth the RIDE

 Again, East Cleveland Theatre (ECT) pulled out off a great production of August Wilson's Jitney.  The performance runs through March 1st, so be sure to catch it, while you can.

I took the Healthline down to the theatre after spending my Sunday in University Circle.  The Healthline runs to Windermere and East Cleveland Theatre is the Belmore stop right before the Windermere Station and across from the fabulous East Cleveland Public Library. 

 Before the show, organizers from the Windermere Renaissance project were on hand to explain their green project proposal for East Cleveland.  Note: this differs from the many projects touted in Cleveland as GREEN.  It was an all around great day topped off for me by the chance to see the play with  legendary design giant Mort Epstein, going strong at 92!!

  The subject of demos and HUD monies did come up (East Cleveland is eligible for 2.2 million and Windermere Renaissance is a CDC).  And, I hope that Windermere Renaissance avoids the subtext of the August Wilson play by avoiding unnecessary tear downs and demolition in historically significant East Cleveland.  Afterall, Dr. Gus Kious is promoting this project and his son is one of the founders of the recycling business A Piece of Cleveland.
