4-3-09 DEA, Marijuana & Cocaine I spent the entire afternoon trying
to find historical data for marijuana & cocaine pricing. What started
me on this search was wanting context for the "war on drugs". It seems
to me the first questions rational thinking persons will want answers to
is; what is being spent and what effect is it having. I wasn't able to
find anything for historical data on marijuana pricing. Here below is
what I did find. Charles In brief, the 1994 RAND study shows that
treatment is 7 times more cost effective than domestic law enforcement
method, 10 times more effective than interdiction, and 23 times more
effective than the "source control" method.

Marijuana, like everything else, is suffering from inflation. In the
70`s, it was sold as a highly illegal drug. Nowadays, it is more of a
commercial crop, with the prices varying based upon many factors that
include the local supply and demand, the ability to grow marijuana
locally, and of course the price in which it's being sold for.
During the 80`s, prices for commercial-grade marijuana varied between
$300 to $600 a pound. In the `90`s, the prices ranged from $200 to
$4000 a pound, with the average pound selling at around $800. The
estimate for 2005 has dramatically jumped - the government estimates
that $19 - $20 billion will be spent on marijuana this year. More at:
