THE PLAINS, Ohio -- Ohioans are buying more earthquake insurance since a series of tremors rumbled through the Youngstown area late last year. With the increase in shaking, the Ohio Insurance Institute said there has been a corresponding interest in earthquake coverage. A survey of OII's member companies found that 44 percent saw an increase in inquiries and more than 20 percent actually sold new endorsements.
Earthquake damage is not covered by standard homeowners policies. It's an add-on.
"Earthquake coverage is going to be excluded," said Mitch Wilson, an OII spokesperson. "There is not going to be coverage automatically provided by the policy."
He said it is always important to ask your insurance agent what is not covered by your policy. Then, you can decide whether you want to add the coverage.
